Description of the walk

Park in a small car park before Olly Castle, next to the hiking noticeboard.

(S/E) Set off along the tarmac road from Fleigneux to Bazeilles and arrive at the end of the tarmac.

(1) Turn right onto a stony path that follows the right bank of the Givonne stream. You’ll reach the confluence of this stream with the Dix Frères stream.

(2) Cross the stream by fording, or use the small bridge a little further upstream. Continue along the Givonne stream. Further on, you’ll reach the Route Forestière du Douaire.

(3) Turn left onto it until you reach the junction with the Pain de Sucre and Criquette forest roads.

(4) Cross at this junction and stay on the Route Forestière du Douaire until you reach the small pond on the Ruisseau des Dix Frères.

(5) Leave the forest road and take the path on the left which runs some distance along the right bank of the stream. You will reach a small bridge.

(6) Cross the stream by turning right on the 5-6-7 mountain bike route. Follow the stream along its left bank. You will reach the junction where the streams meet.

(2) Cross the stream via the ford or the small bridge and follow the outward route back to the hiking car park (S/E).

During periods of heavy rain, it is not possible to cross the fords. The small bridge (landmark 2: two logs with planks nailed across them) was swept away by a flood and no longer connects the two banks. It has been reinforced with large branches. However, crossing this makeshift bridge (2 to 3 metres long) may prove difficult for those who lack confidence or balance.

A lovely, quiet walk through the woods. Have a picnic halfway along the route at point 5, on the bench overlooking the small pond. There isn’t actually a bridge at point 6, but crossing the stream is no problem as there isn’t much water at this time of year.

A lovely route to follow in pleasant, shady weather at 30°C; there’s no bridge at point 6, but the ford is no problem at all

A lovely walk through woodland; the map is reliable, as are the signposts, except at point 6 – there is no bridge and the ford is quite tricky, especially at this time of year when the water is high… I would therefore recommend altering the route at point 5, retracing your steps and taking the path on the right which runs alongside the stream on the other bank; this way, you rejoin the original path without having to cross the stream at point 6.

A short walk that takes place entirely in woodland.
The climb up the Douaire forest road is a bit long, especially when accompanied by quite young children, but the reward comes just before leaving this road at the stream’s pond, where you can have a family picnic at a table by the water’s edge.
The return journey along the stream is then almost entirely downhill.
There are a few “false trails” caused by logging operations, but with the map you can find your way very quickly.
Please note that a significant part of the return route (from waypoint 5 almost to waypoint 2) has no mobile phone coverage.
So, as always, take the sensible precaution of carrying the IGN map in your rucksack, just in case!
Note: I couldn’t find the bridge at waypoint 6. Perhaps it no longer exists?
