Ashburton walks

This stage has a sting in the tail as an option for all those YHA lovers. The Two Moors Way goes about 5 miles east of YHA Dartmoor at Bellever but that shouldn't stop you from staying there. The extra few miles at the end of this stage and the journey back to the Two Moors Way at the beginning of the next stage are in no way laborious, rather a bonus.

This Dartmoor route uses a section of the Two Moors Way. The route follows paths and tracks although a good sense of direction is needed in what can be an unforgiving landscape. After wet weather, streams may be in spate so care is needed crossing them.

Includes a fording of the Dart river as long as it's not in spate!

The River Dart, both the East and West Dart, rise high on Dartmoor, flowing down off the moors, to meet at Dartmeet. Each river has many must-see places; this short walk leads to one of the West Dart's attractions. The walk leading down to the river of the West Dart, stepping stones, a quiet spot to watch wildlife, or have a picnic.

Discover the Totnes of times gone by. A walk through Totnes’ narrow streets to discover a town crammed full of history. This walk can be extended by following the River Dart to nearby Dartington along the riverside path.

This stage is the last part of the Two Moors Way in Dartmoor National Park. First, it retraces steps back to Bennet's Cross to join the trail and then avoids the high ground to the west by heading for the Teign Valley. There are a mix of landscapes and a real high point at Hunter's Tor near Castle Drogo.

A circular walk in the east of Dartmoor following roads and paths, including sections of the Two Moors Way. The walk includes a mix of open moorland, footpaths and quiet roads where the farming hinterlands meet the moor. Except for the section north of the road near the Warren House Inn, all the paths are well-trodden and waymarked. There are some steep sections. Apart from the high moors, this walk is fairly sheltered from the prevailing SW winds.

This is an unmarked hike (but mainly obvious paths during clear days) located on the easter side of Dartmoor National Park. During this trip, you will enjoy peaceful moors, great views from tops and stone circles historic site.

Superb views over the Teign Estuary from the hills above the village, and remnants of a historic Bishop’s Palace.

Wistman's Wood is a National Nature Reserve, an ancient dwarf oak woodland. It is one of Britain's ancient temperate rainforests. This route leads to the edge of the woods, and find the Buller Stone, an inscribed granite boulder. The route then climbs up to the ridge and some impressive moorland Tors, with panoramic views.

A walk out onto open moorland, with the reassurance of following clearly defined linear features. The walk follows the boundary of the Forest of Dartmoor, and continues along the Devonport Leat to Peat Cot, a remote moorland hamlet. Working the way back to Tor Royal, Bullpark and Bacholar's Hall, before returning to Princetown and views of the Prison.

A circular walk using some of Devon's historic 'green lanes' through Cornworthy, Tuckenhay and Allaleigh. The route passes through the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with views from coast to moor.

The old Princetown to Yelverton moorland railway line, now disused, is a well-defined linear feature high up on Dartmoor, a popular destination. The walk, starting in Princetown and 'walking out the track', offers options to explore Stone Age settlements and the disused granite quarries in the area, passing some Dartmoor tors, and on a clear day, provides some far-reaching views of West Devon.

A walk to explore some moorland tors, an open moorland walk, which offers the experience of the remoteness of the moor, yet is still relatively safe for the novice walker. The walk has several features that can act as a safety net for the walker to reference, to check the location. Should the walker wander, there are other natural stops to get back on track.

The route is on Dartmoor's south moor, and it follows some well-defined linear features, which will assist route finding. The route passes many interesting artifacts, including moorland Crosses, Fox Tor Mire, which inspired Conan Doyle's The Hounds of the Baskerville, and Grimpen Mire. The river Swincombe footbridge, and even walking on a part of what was once a road built by conscientious objectors.

A walk that takes in the industrial past within this area. Climbing some Tors and seeing the panoramic views. Shortly after the first waypoint, the route doesn't follow paths on the map, but can still be followed. The paths on this route are not very visible/marked in places. It is strongly recommended that you follow the route using the GPX on the Visorando app.

A wonderful circular walk from Clifford Bridge to Fingle Bridge on a gentle path along the River Teign before heading steeply onto Butterdon Down and descending back to Clifford Bridge. Beautiful woodland views.

Lovely walk to discover the Dartmoor National Park. This walk starts from Fingle Bridge National Trust and has great view on Castle Drogo.

Stage 3 takes us right into the Dartmoor National Park and is where the original Two Moors Way starts. Once out of Ivybridge, past the old Stowford Paper Mill and out onto the moors, you really feel that you're on a long-distance trail. Look out for the MW signs as you work your way across the tops, through Scorriton to reach Holne.

From the edge of the moors into the AONB. A lovely wander following the valley of the River Erme, in an area where the wild beauty of the moor and the mellow delights of rolling South Devon meet and merge.

Amazing views over the China clay works, mica pits, and views across to Plymouth sound in one direction and moorland in the other.

Stage 6 is a tricky navigational test as we leave the Dartmoor National Park and head into Mid Devon. The route crosses the A 30, the main Exeter to Barnstaple rail line and the busy A 377. There's plenty to keep you occupied and some pretty hamlets to go through (avoiding some interesting villages, so you might be tempted to go off-route at some point).

A lovely, safe dog walk, starting at the eastern car park for Woodleigh Woods. No road sections, so dogs can run off lead. Part of the walk is within the Woodland Trust woods, so please follow any instructions, close gates, pick up dog poo, etc …

A beautiful walk past granite Devon longhouses and open moorland on the edge of Dartmoor. It's recommended to do this walk clockwise as the last footpath is difficult to find going in the other direction.

The lower half of the Dart Valley Trail, a great circular walk in itself! One of the area’s truly great walks, this day- long ramble follows the wooded banks of the broad and beautiful Dart estuary, on a route crammed with gems and jewels of human and natural history.

A short waterside and woodland stroll. This short walk skirts the edges of Waterhead creek in Kingswear before heading into the woods alongside the estuary and back along the railway line.

Castles and cliffs, seals and skylarks. A circular walk around to the mouth of the Dart estuary with views out to sea and along to Start Bay. Explore the World War 2 battery at Froward and find out more about the Daymark.

A lovely linear walk up the Dart Estuary. Enjoy views of the estuary as you pass through woodland, farm fields and the Greenway Estate. You can choose to return by water, on foot or by steam!

This is a (mostly) circular walk that takes in a short section of the South West Coast Path and passes sub-tropical plants, dramatic cliffs and WW2 relics on a route that skirts the beautiful Coleton Fishacre house and gardens. The path is clearly marked and well-trodden. There are several steep sections and plenty of steps, but there are lovely views as compensation.

A network of paths and green lanes on a wild and rugged coastline just around the corner from Brixham. Beautiful beaches, the silvery sea, and the curves, cliffs and coves of a superb stretch of the coast.

A peaceful woodland walk up to the earthworks of a Civil War fort, then around the headland to enjoy views along the coast and out to sea.

A Dartmoor walk that includes the most north-easterly summit in the National Park which offers some fine views especially to the north. The route needs careful navigation at the start and in poor weather you need a good sense of direction and compass skills.

A walk exploring the wild and rugged coastline of the AONB. This walk is a perfect mix of natural and local history – with the spectacular coast of the Brixham and Kingswear Peninsula, and the WW2 military site at Froward Point.

Countryside and castles on the South Devon coast. Small but perfectly formed, this satisfying circuit is full of character and interest, offering glorious views from the cliffs, the tang of the sea close up on the rocky shore, the rich history of the castle and the beautiful River Dart. This circular walk can also be started at Dartmouth Castle. You can use the Castle ferry from Dartmouth, to reach the alternative start of this walk.
