Dartmeet to Belstone near Okehampton - Dartmoor Perambulation

This is the second stage of the Dartmoor Perambulation.

This route follows the eastern section of the original route; key checkpoints are used.

This section of the route offers various terrains, from country lanes to some reasonable hills to climb.

This route is completed, following the Visorando App, but may need local variations due to weather conditions and access. Read the Notes for more guidance

Description of the walk

(S) Leaving Dartmeet W3W>>>, the route heads north up the valley to Walla Brook (1), continues up the brook to Babney, then right to Sherwell, two moorland farm/hamlets. Continue north past Cator to Pizwell Farm (2), through Sousson's Plantation, and up past the old mine workings and the main road. See, remote public house - The Warren House Inn( A).

(3) Hurston Ridge, and across Chadford Common to Metheral (4). Approaching the Fernworthy Reservoir and Dam, crossing on the lower side of the dam. Up to or around Thornworthy Tor to Long Stone.

(5) Note: At this point, the route will become more challenging. Check the time taken; the next section will take longer. Make Camp, or consider options.

Escape Route: Heading northeast will get you to the nearest access road. Chagford, about 5km away. W3W at this point >>>>

Heading in a westerly direction, approaching the Teign River, it may get a little wet underfoot. Then ascend the hill to Watern Tor (6). Contour around to Wild Tor. The Dartmoor Firing Range is further west - see marker poles. From Wild Tor head, northeast to Hound Tor (7), and continue to Cosdon Hill (8).

Option 1: To continue to Cullever Stips (9) then to (E), or continue on the Perambulation route - Belstone to Princetown of the Dartmoor Perambulation >>>>

Option 2: At Cosdon Hill (8) follow the app west down to the river, and rising to a track, turn right on the track, off the app directions, which will lead into Belstone (E).

  • This route is achievable in one day, but may require two days. Option at (5): an intermediate point if not wild camping, leave the moor at Batworthy to Chagford
  • On the north moor, this route passes alongside and does not enter the Dartmoor Firing Range.

During the walk

  • Follow Country Codes
  • Leave no trace: leave only footprints, but take away great memories
  • Dogs: Keep under control, and bag it and bin it, don't sling it. Farmers do have special powers regarding dogs worrying, even on open-access land.
  • Rivers and marshes, choose a safe place to cross, which may be off the app route
  • Self-care: Know your own limitations; walking is an adventure and can involve risks. Be responsible and know when to turn back, rather than get into difficulties
  • First Aid: Treat blisters before they occur,

During the route

(A) The Warren House Inn, the second-highest pub in England, is an old 18th-century Inn where the fire in the hearth is reputed to have never been left to go out.

  • At Dartmeet: See the old Clapper Bridge across the river.
  • Fernworthy Reservoir, a water catchment for the east of Dartmoor
  • Kestor Rock, Pound, Stone Row, and Circles (5)
  • Watern Tor, the edge of one of the Dartmoor Firing Ranges, is marked by the red and white posts and red flags on the tors when firing.
