Description of the walk

Coming from Le Creusot, head towards the Parc des Combes. Just past the fairground rides and the miniature railway station, there are several car parks. The one closest to the starting point is located after car park 3.

(S/E) A sign indicates “Le Creusot Vol libre” and “Club canin”. Take this path, with two wooden chalets visible on your left. Continue along the path on the left, with the microlight runway on your right, until you reach a path at the Étang de la Sitrelle du Diable.

(1) Turn right and follow this path for approximately 1.3 km until you reach a place called La Collonge, where it becomes a small tarmac road on the left. When you reach the 90° left-hand bend, leave this road to the right via a small path (be careful, it’s downhill) which joins the D680.

(2) Cross the road – be careful, as it is very busy. Opposite, take a dirt track that starts with a small bridge over the stream. After about 400 m, leave the track on your right and continue straight on. At the edge of the woods, turn 90° to your left and head straight through the Bois de Cheuche, which climbs for about 500 m.

(3) At the top, facing a meadow enclosed by an electric fence, turn 90° to the right. 500 m further on, the path descends to your left, offering a view of the hamlet of Pouilly. When you reach the junction with the small tarmac road, leave the farms of Pouilly on your left and turn right. 50 m further on, turn right again until you reach the top of the hill.

(4) Leave the road and take a dirt track on the left. Carry on straight ahead, heading south-south-east. At the next junction, ignore the track on the left which leads down to Vizy and continue to the right until you reach the road.

(5) Follow this road to the left, with a small pond on your left. At the bend, leave the road and take a path on your right that leads uphill. At the top, turn left to rejoin the D228 (elevation 455), which you leave immediately to turn right onto a dirt track, and continue for about 500 metres.

(6) Leave this track, which bends to the right, and turn left instead. Pass through three gates (remembering to close them behind you) over a distance of about 300 m until you reach the edge of the Montagne de la Châtelaine woodland.
The fairly wide track winds its way down through the woods via a few very sharp bends.

(7) On leaving the woods, take thefirst path at a 90° angle to the left; thesecond path leads to the Chalas d’en Haut farm. Continue straight on along this path, with the red-brick Château Bruel on your right. The path widens near Montcenis, in the La Châtelaine neighbourhood.

(8) Carry on straight ahead through Montcenis, past the sports grounds and the small pond on your right, following the Chemin de Bruel. Then turn right onto the Chemin de la Brasserie and join the Rue d’Autun (D980).
Turn left onto this road.

(9) At the roundabout, carry on straight ahead towards Les Combes, taking the Chemin des Hauts de Baudot.
At the last house on the left, take the path on the left, easily going round the barrier.

(10) At the junction, turn left to cross the Les Combes neighbourhood, following Rue des Combes du Haut and then rejoining Chemin des Hauts de Baudot. You’ll arrive at the Croix du Lot crossroads.

(11) Avoid the three tarmac roads and take the path on the right, which runs parallel to the Promenade des Crêtes. Finish by following this path to the car park (S/E).

A pleasant route with mostly wide paths through the fields. Beautiful rolling countryside and a lovely sense of tranquillity. The elevation gain is easily manageable (two short steep sections, but nothing too bad). The only downside is the final stretch on tarmac, which is the least enjoyable part of this circular route!

A pleasant walk. I parked just before point 9 (to avoid the least scenic part at the start) and between points 6 and 7 I opted to take the ridge route – you have to follow the hedge through the meadow and then climb over the fence to get back on the path. The highest point (479m, marked on the map) can be reached via a fork in the path and offers a lovely view. Descend via "Mont Vaux". This adds a little extra elevation but avoids the bulk of the passage through Montcenis.

Hello, a really lovely walk… As we weren’t very familiar with the area, we didn’t get lost. Explanations 10 and 11 left us a bit puzzled, but by looking at the map and discussing it, we managed to find our way – even though we’re not from round here… But it’s a really lovely walk – thanks to whoever suggested this route.
