This route is the first part of thefourth stage of a seven-day tour of the Alsatian side of the Vosges mountains. Most of the route is on forest roads in good condition. The signage is excellent, consisting of signs with an orange or red mountain bike logo and the letters TMV (Traversée du Massif Vosgien).

Description of the route

The start of this fourth stage is in front of the church in Hohwald.

(S) Go down Rue de l'Église to Rue Principale.
Turn left and continue to a new crossroads 60 m further on.

(1) Turn right onto Rue du Wittertalhof. Pass the bakery. Follow the road for 1 km.

(2) Turn left and follow the small road that climbs into the forest for 2.5 km. 400 m after a hairpin bend, you will reach another crossroads.

(3) Leave the forest road, turn left and continue along the steep path. After 200 m, it joins the wide Chemin de la Bellevue. Follow it to the Col de Bellevue.

(4) Continue straight ahead on a path that descends for 800 m and joins a forest track.

(5) Turn right and follow the track for about 1.2 km.

(6) Continue straight ahead and follow the path for about 2 km.

(7) Return to a forest road and follow it to the right for 1 km.

(8) Turn left and follow the road for 1.2 km.

(9) Turn right before the D253 and continue along a path for 500 m.

(10) Turn left and join the D253 to reach the end of the first section of the fourth stage at the junction of the D203 and D253 (E)

I did this hike in very hot weather, so I didn't want to do too much climbing.
It was perfect, lots of forest and great views, so much fun that I did numbers 1 and 2 back to back.
