Description of the walk

The hike starts at the church in Arracourt, Grande Rue, with parking available next to the church.

(S/E) Opposite the church entrance, turn right onto Grande Rue and pass the war memorial, the tank and the chapel.

(1) At the Y-junction of the D23 and D914, take the small road on the right, Chemin du Haut de la Croix. Join a small road (crossroads with a crucifix), take the path on the left and continue along the small road. Go straight through the Harloville farm to join another small road at the farm exit. Further on, join the D23.

(2) Turn right. At the junction with the D123, continue straight ahead.

(3) In a dip in the road, take a track downhill to the right and join Bezange-la-Grande via Rue de Froville.

(4) Take the second street on the right to arrive behind the church and turn onto the small street on the right. In the bend of this street, near the Loutre Noire stream, take the path on the left and cross over the Loutre Noire. Join a small road, Chemin de Vic.

(5) Turn right and cross the Ruisseau du Pâquis on a bridge and continue to a fork.

(6) Leave the road, take the second field path on the left, going uphill with a hedge on your right, and follow the two right-hand bends.

(7) The path going up into the Bois de Taxon is inaccessible, so at the end of the woods, turn left and go up between the woods and the field. At the top, turn left, then right to go around the meadow and join an uphill dirt track.

(8) Cross the clearing and continue on the gravel track, Tranchée de la Basse Ligniere. At elevation 301, join a wide track, Route forestière du Champ Vautrin.

(9) Turn right. At the Y-junction with a track, go straight ahead.

(10) 20 m further on, at the junction with Tranchée de Rémérabois, continue straight ahead.

(11) At the Y-junction of two tracks, 200 m further on, take the left track and join a small road.

(12) Keep right. Cross the D914 with caution to continue opposite on the D23c.

(13) Take the first track on the right and rejoin the D914.

(14) Continue carefully along the road, pass the castle and join the church (S/E).

Notes

At the point (13), experienced hikers can turn right to descend the Tranchée de Rémérabois the last few metres are tricky, go through the barbed wire, turn left and walk through the meadow at the edge of the woods, go back through the barbed wire at the gate to the meadow and join a field path along the Taillis de Boncourt, follow this path, go over the Loutre Noire and reach Arracourt via the stony track

Unfortunately, the route rejoins Arracourt by walking along the D914, which is not very busy, as there are no other accessible paths between the Bezange la Grande national forest and the village of Arracourt.

Worth a visit

As you cross the rebuilt village of Arracourt, see the tank and read the information panels about this great tank battle of the Second World War.

Opposite the tank, walk past the Notre Dame de Pitié chapel.

In Bezange-la-Grande, take a tour of the church.
