Old Aspremont

Starting from the charming village of Aspremont, this short but challenging round trip hike takes you up to Vieil Aspremont, the ruins of the old village abandoned in 1426.

Description of the walk

Departure from Saint-Claude Church at the foot of the village of Aspremont.

(S/E) Take Avenue Caravadossi, heading north-east, marked by theGR®5(red and white markings).

(1) At the first right-hand bend, leave this road on the left and follow theGR® northwards. You are now on a small bumpy road that will take you to Place des Salettes, right next to the chapel of the same name.

(2) Turn left onto Route de la Cima and continue to follow theGR® for a few metres, then take the path that climbs to the right, still marked in red and white.

(3) You will arrive at a new road, the Route de Barri. Turn left and a few metres further on, take the path that climbs up to the right again. During the ascent, you will be able to see the summit arch of Vieil Aspremont to the north-north-west.
The path climbs up to a dog centre, which you will pass on the left. Just after this, you will arrive at a wide track.

(4) Leave theGR® and turn left to join another track on the right at the bend. Follow it for about ten metres.
Look carefully to your right, where a steep path climbs north-west. Follow this unmarked path in the same direction until you reach the first ruins of Vieil Aspremont. Walk past the first ruins on the left, then enter at the old chapel and climb up to the main arch on the left.

There is a magnificent view of the lower Var valley through this arch. There is also a beautiful panorama of the Mercantour mountains if the weather is clear.
Return by the same route to the Church of Saint-Claude (S/E).

A very beautiful hike, which we completed with a detour to the Cuor cross, offering a stunning 360° view and magnificent vistas over the Var valley. I highly recommend this hike.

It is possible to park further up the trail. As the first part is not particularly interesting, I recommend parking at the Notre-Dame des Salettes chapel.

A very beautiful hike for the first 200 metres of elevation gain and very well marked. However, as clearly stated in the description, the last part is difficult to find and not marked at all. The path is not easy at all and the slope is very steep. It was difficult for us as we are not experienced hikers. We made it to the top nonetheless and were delighted to discover the Arch and the superb view from up there.

A lovely walk to do when it's not too hot. You can finish the hike by exploring the cave located on the GR5 trail at the first high-voltage pylon on the left, 15 metres from the path, about 50 metres from where you left it to climb up to Viel Aspremont. For the more athletic, you can also climb Mount Cima, which offers a superb panorama.

A beautiful hike with splendid views from the ruins over Mercantour, the Var valley and the coast. The first snows are definitely here No worries about the route.

Hello, very nice short hike with a beautiful view, but it annoys me that there are no markings and sometimes you have to search for the path, which is a real shame! But still worth doing.

Unobstructed view of the surroundings. I did it from Nice L'Air St Michel to make it more challenging.

The difficulty increases as you get closer to the goal. But as this hike is short, you just need to adjust your pace and accept that it will take 10 minutes longer to enjoy the breathtaking view from the summit.
The explanations of the route in four points are excellent.

Great walk. The end is a bit steep, but the view from the top is so beautiful! We loved it!
