Circular route below Mont Chauve de Tourrette from Gheirart

This largely shaded circular route, starting from Gheirart (or Gueirar on the IGN map), will take you along the eastern flank of Mont Chauve de Tourette, above La Condamine, and offer views of most of the major peaks of the Mercantour and the villages of the Nice hinterland.
The use of a GPS or the Visorando app is recommended.

Description of the walk

This walk starts from the Gheirart water reservoir, in the commune of Tourette Levens, which you reach via the tarmac Clérissi path, on the road to Mont Chauve d’Aspremont. There are plenty of parking spaces near the reservoir.

(S/E) From the car park, head north and take the path to the left of the Gheirart CDV 25 track, which runs alongside it through terraced fields. Follow this shaded path, marked in yellow, for a few hundred metres and then descend onto the track.

(1) Follow it for about 50 metres before turning right onto the path marked in yellow. Shortly afterwards, you’ll come to a bend in the track; follow it for about 50 metres to reach the start of a path climbing up to the left.

(2) Head northwards, through the forest overlooking track CDV 25. Turn left again at the junction with the path coming from La Condamine, below. Continue along this path to reach a junction, after a climb towards the south.

(3) Turn right onto a faint path climbing up the eastern slope of Mont Chauve d’Aspremont. After a fairly steep climb and a few hairpin bends, the path descends towards the south-southeast and joins a junction with the path coming from Nice.

(4) Turn right for a short detour northwards to join the road leading to Mont Chauve de Tourrette. Turn left immediately to bypass the restricted area. Continue to marker 837 at Col de la Prairie.

(5) Turn right to reach a viewpoint to the west of Mont Chauve de Tourrette, after a wide right-hand bend.

(6) Enjoy the view, then turn back towards Col de la Prairie, then the junction near Sambule.

(4) Descend through a burnt forest area towards the south-south-west to the path from Falicon to Gueirart.

(7) Cross the Falicon to Gueirart track, continue the descent on the path opposite to join the wide Clérissi track.

(8) Turn left, heading east, and climb up the CDV 25 track on the left. When you reach the junction at marker 804, leave the Clairissi track and climb up to the left to reach the car park at the Gheirart water reservoir (S/E).

Follow the route using GPS, as the paths have been damaged by recent rain, but there are magnificent views of the Mercantour and the Côte d’Azur on the way back
A very enjoyable walk

A pleasant walk, with plenty of shaded spots to cool off. However, the path is sometimes poorly signposted.

Signposting is virtually non-existent. The starting points for the trails (1 and 2) that cross the track at the start of the walk are difficult to find.

Otherwise, the route is pleasant with some lovely views of the coast on a clear day. Not recommended during the summer months.

Thank you, François, for this lovely walk, which has recently been added to the Visorando directory.

Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The ascent is mostly through woodland and the return route is exposed to the sun. Walking poles are useful on the descent given the small stones that sometimes roll underfoot. One detail: after point 2, turn left as soon as you reach the farmhouse (where you’ll be greeted by barking dogs, though they’re tied up and don’t seem particularly vicious anyway); unless you’d rather say hello first to the few horses and mules about a hundred metres further on.

The route description is quite good, but the virtual lack of signposting means you’ll need to check your GPS to make sure you stay on track. There are some lovely views all along the way. A pleasant little hike around the “Monts Chauves” in Nice.
