Towards Saint-Jean d'Orbestier Abbey

An easy and pleasant circular route from the port of Bourgenay via Orbestier Abbey. You will discover pleasant and peaceful paths in the first part after crossing Bourgenay following the mixed trail.
The return journey is along the seafront, taking you past the Bois de Saint-Jean before diving down to Cayola Bay and its footbridge, then following the coastline to the car park at the end of the route.

Description of the walk

Park in the Bourgenay harbour car park.

(S/E) At the bronze statue (La Dame de Bourgenay) at the edge of the jetty, walk past the harbour master's office and restaurants, then head north-east. Walk along the chapel wall, then follow the cycle path to a large road junction known as La Croisée (shops).

(1) Turn left and follow the cycle path, which goes around a first roundabout and then passes in front of a calvary. Immediately after the calvary, cross Avenue de la Mine (no protected crossing) and continue north on a small single-lane road for about 100 metres before turning onto a wide zigzag path. Cross the road through the hamlet of Beauregard and continue straight ahead, still heading north, until you reach a crossroads.

(2) Turn left and then take the middle path (north-west) a few metres further on. Stay in this direction and pass between the Pierre et Vacances ponds (golf course water reservoirs) and the water treatment plant. Cross a road and continue straight ahead on the path. Pass in front of the Grands Cailloux horse stables. Then continue downhill to the north-west until you reach the ford.

(3) There is a footbridge if the ford is impassable. Go back up the path to the next crossroads and take a small tarmac road opposite for a few hundred metres.

(4) Follow the first path on the left at the Vendée General Council sign (chemin de ronde). After about 50 metres, continue along the path on the right until you reach a crossroads. Do not take the path on the left, which leads to the Bois de Saint-Jean, but take the one on the right. After 50 metres, turn left and continue north-west through some pleasant woodland. This will take you to the edge of the road (Petit Versailles).

(5) Continue along the sandy path on the left. Stay on this marked path heading south-west. There is a lovely view of the Abbey of Saint-Jean d'Orbestier, which was renovated in 2017. Follow the road, staying on the path, then cross at the roundabout using the pedestrian crossing.

(6) Continue left along the seafront. View of Anse aux Moines. Continue on the cycle path which climbs eastwards, passing in front of the houses of Bois de Saint-Jean.

(7) Enter the woods on the right at the last property fence. Do not go deep into the woods, but stay on a small path parallel to the cycle path, which is more pleasant. Further on, rejoin the cycle path and pass in front of the Michelin-starred Cayola restaurant.

(8) Before taking the footbridge of the same name, you can enjoy the view of the bay on the right (bench). Take the footbridge, then follow the cycle path again and theGR® (red and white markings), which deviates from it at times. At the next crossroads, continue right towards the south (the cycle path continues eastwards). Follow theGR® which runs along the cliffs by the sea and descends via steps to sea level.

(9) After this passage, continue along the coast on the path protected by fences. Be careful as the end of this path is damaged (due to successive storms). The last few metres are on pebbles by the sea and you will arrive at the Mine fish ponds (car park).

(10) Continue on theGR® trail that follows the coast. There are sandy sections of varying lengths depending on the season. You can leave theGR® trail at a fork in the path.

(11) Continue straight ahead on a slightly gravelly red path or stay on theGR® along the seafront. The two paths rejoin before arriving at the port to return to the car park via a final staircase (S/E).

Notes

Important: due to a decree, the section of the trail between points 9 and 10 is closed due to the risk of rockfalls (May 2020). From point 9, take a small road that runs alongside a campsite and take the cycle path on the right at the crossroads. Go around the first roundabout, then the second roundabout at the aquarium. Continue along the cycle path and after 400 m turn right towards the fish ponds (be careful when crossing the road) and continue to point 10.
Toilets at the first roundabout as you leave the port.
Shops at the Croisée roundabout at the start.
Restaurants in the port.
Michelin-starred restaurant in Cayola.

Worth a visit

See the bronze statue of La Dame de Bourgenay at the start of the pier in the harbour.

After leaving the port, you can enter the chapel and go down to the crypt, which was spared during the Revolution.

Between the La Croisée crossroads (1) and the (2), you walk alongside part of the golf course (18 holes).

The Abbey of Saint-Jean d'Orbestier, facing the sea, dates from 1107 and was recently restored in 2017.

During this hike, you can stroll through the Saint-Jean woods by following theGR® from the point (7), which will add about 15 minutes to your walk. There is a beautiful view of Cayola Bay and Les Sables d'Olonne Bay. TheGR® rejoins the cycle path before the Cayola restaurant.

There is a viewpoint at the footbridge along the restaurant (bench). At low tide, you can see the remains of pontoons and black pile cones from an old 12th-century pier among the pebbles (origin of Cayola).

You can visit the mine's fish ponds at the point (10).

There is an aquarium called "Le 7ème Continent" (The 7th Continent), accessible by road near the point (9).

Veillon Beach (large car park) is 2 km to the south-east and can be reached by car or on foot via the coastal path.

Hello, you need to go to point 10 as indicated in the information to avoid the road by reaching the seafront at the fish ponds of La Mine.
This last section between the fishponds and the port of Bourgenay is still accessible today and very pleasant.

The hike is now inaccessible upstream from point 9. We had to do more than half of the climb (the most enjoyable part) by following the road, as we didn't know where we could rejoin the coastal path. This part of the hike was completely uninteresting. I would not recommend it.

A beautiful hike!
Indeed, the section between "9" and "11" is inaccessible. However, you can follow the GR trail, which will take you to the rest of the hike.

It is true that for some time now, due to storms, the coastal path has been deteriorating. A notice has been posted warning of the poor condition of this path and prohibiting access to it, so I feel obliged to advise against using this section.
I regularly pass through this area to monitor developments. Land has been taken from private plots along the coast, but this is not yet sufficient.
From point 8, it is possible to continue along the cycle path and reach point 10.

Superb hike, partly along the coast. However, at No. 9, a municipal by-law prohibits access to the path along the coast (we turned back and rejoined it at the bottom of Impasse Porteau), but once again, the municipal by-law prohibited access. We decided to take this path anyway after checking its condition and how dangerous it was. But by being careful and paying attention, as there are some loose rocks in places, it is perfectly possible to take it, as it is really worth it and the view is magnificent.

Hello
However, two small observations:

1) We no longer pass point 4, because a barbed wire fence has been put up along the path with a chain to prevent it from being opened. So the route now goes as follows: 4 (blocked), then towards 7, then towards 8, then towards 3, taking the departmental road towards the Saint Jean mill. This fence is obviously new, but why?
2) The route from 1 to 4 is not really interesting. It is a beautiful path, but the hedges are very high, and there is nothing interesting to see. However, point 3 is a very beautiful passage in a hollow at the ford.

I think the best route would be 1, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 and back the other way, with a different view of the coast, different light and a landscape that changes with the tide.

Congratulations on your excellent website, with very clear maps, good quality routes and minimal road travel.
