Description of the walk

(S) From the hotel in Grachen, join the Tour du Mont Rose trail, which is also marked in white, red and white (BRB).
Begin a gentle climb through the woods, parallel to the Hannigalp cable car.
Reach the Hannigalp upper station.

(1) Go around the ridge and head south-east, then quickly south.

(2) From there, there are no difficulties in terms of orientation or walking. It is a succession of gentle climbs followed by gentle descents, and so on throughout the day.
There are posts and markers at all the junctions, as many paths from the valley join this balcony path.

(2) Cross the Schweibbach torrent and reach the Biderbach torrent.

(3) Go through the small tunnel protecting the trail from the strong current generated by the melting of the Bidergletscher glacier above your heads. Arrive at Saas-Grund.

(4) Enter Saas Fee via one last crossing and head to the hotel (E) for your final night.

There is a lot of water in the torrents flowing from the glaciers. Although purification of this water is not necessary, beware of the stomach problems it can cause.

Worth a visit

Saas-Fee: a world-famous resort on a par with Zermatt, offering magical peaks.
The next day, before returning to Fionnay, it is worth taking the time to climb by cable car and snow metro to the upper station of Mittel Allalin to soak up the glacial mass present here. From there, the peaks of the Allalinhorn (4,027 m) and Alphubel (4,206 m) are within reach... provided you have a long enough arm.
