A history of lakes in the Vallée d'Abondance

Set off to explore a mountain lake, which you can walk around, and, a little higher up, an ancient lake that is now filled in, located at the foot of a valley dominated by impressive cliffs. A route with a moderate elevation gain, featuring numerous information panels, which can be an opportunity for an educational family walk.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park above Lac des Plagnes, at the end of the road from Abondance.

Signposts are located at all important points, and the entire circuit of the lake in an anti-clockwise direction ((1)-(2)-(1)) is signposted "Tour du Lac des Plagnes".

(S) From the car park, walk down the road for a few dozen metres. Just before a small chapel, turn left. Go past a red and white barrier for motor vehicles and you will reach the lake.

(1) Continue straight ahead on the dyke. At the end, turn left and continue along the lake. At a fork, take the path on the right which leaves the shore and climbs slightly.

(2) At another fork, take the path on the right towards Cubourré. Climb up the hillside and cross a stream on a wooden footbridge at the bottom of a waterfall. Then turn right and climb up the winding path with the waterfall on your right. You will come out onto an alpine track.

(3) Turn right, cross the stream and pass the chalet on your right. Go around a wetland (an old filled-in lake) on the right and follow the mountain track to a large boulder with information panels.

(4) Retrace your steps back to Cubourré.

(3) After crossing the stream, turn left towards the lake. Take the winding path along the waterfall, cross the stream again and return to the fork.

(2) Turn right and continue around the lake. Cross the stream again via a footbridge. Continue through the woods and, when you reach the chalets, turn left to reach the lake shore. Follow the shore to the corner of the dyke.

(1) Turn right to reach the road and then right again to return to the car park.

Waypoints

  6. S/E : km 3.85 - alt. 1,201 m - Car park - Lac des Plagnes

Notes

Good sports shoes are necessary. The path between the footbridge after (2) and Cubourré (3) is steep and rocky: in wet weather, this path is slippery, so be careful.
Despite the moderate altitude, bring warm clothing. In summer, remember to bring sunscreen. Bring water. There are picnic tables by the lake.
In summer, Lac des Plagnes, accessible by car, is a popular spot: be sure to arrive early in the morning.

Variations
- Tour of Lac des Plagnes alone - Follow the hike to the fork (2). There, take the left path and complete the circular tour of the lake (last two paragraphs of the description). Allow about 45 minutes.
- Variation descending from Cubourré - From (3), it is possible to return directly to the car park without taking the path along the waterfall. Follow the mountain track north-east towards "Parking (direct)" and at the next junction, turn left and you will soon reach the car park. This alternative route cuts out about half of the walk around the lake and may be useful if the weather conditions deteriorate (e.g. rain) or if you do not wish to take the waterfall path again.

Worth a visit

A pretty mountain lake dominated to the north-east by the tall silhouette of Mont de Grange, Lac des Plagnes is a destination in its own right.

Throughout the hike, there are "Géoparc Chablais" information panels about the geology, the formation of the lakes and their filling, the fauna and the vegetation.

The top of the hike, between (3) and (4), dominated to the south by the north faces of Pointe de la Chavache and Pointe d'Entre Deux Pertuis, offers a beautiful mountain atmosphere.

This hike can easily be shortened (which is what I did; I stopped at the footbridge that crosses the waterfall), but be mindful of the time as it can get quite crowded and there isn't enough space in the car park.

This short hike at the end of one of the branches of the Vallée d'Abondance is really very pleasant. The lake is beautiful, the climb up to Lac Comblé is not too difficult, so it's very doable with young children, and there's a great spot for a picnic in the cool shade next to a waterfall. However, there are two points to watch out for: horseflies around the lake and the route around the lake, which is not a proper path on one side and requires some acrobatics. I would recommend going and returning on the right-hand side of the lake when you arrive.

A beautiful spot for a winter outing. There is a lot of ice on the trail, making the ascents and descents tricky, so snowshoes or crampons are essential.

A pleasant walk even in December, as you can skate on the frozen lake (28 cm of ice). An association organises skate hire in a trailer with different sizes available. For my part, I pushed on to the Tinderets refuge at 1,495 m, which takes an extra 45 minutes.
