Mont de Grange from the Saint-Théodule Chapel

Climb to the highest point in the Abondance region, which overlooks the entire valley. The first half of the hike takes place on an alpine trail. The second half follows the long Coicon ridge which, despite its steepness, remains the easiest route to this magnificent viewpoint, where you can enjoy a superb 360° panorama.

You are in a protected area! See the regulations in the practical information section.

Description of the walk

Access from Abondance, heading towards "Lac de la Plagne" then "Follebin" and "Chapelle Saint-Théodule".
Parking is available just beyond the Chapelle Saint-Théodule, in a small car park near a fountain and an information board. The tarmac road then gives way to a stony track.

The route is generally unmarked, except for the short section between Lenlevay and the base of the Arête de Coicon, where you will find red and whiteGR®5markings. There are directional signs at important points and marker posts up to Lenlevay.

(S/E) Take the track that branches off to the right of the information board, continuing along the route taken by car (south-east). At a nearby fork, take the left-hand path and pass by an oratory. At the signpost that appears immediately, follow the direction of Lenlevay and take a steep track into the forest. Cross a stream, continue on the steep track and reach the Chalet du Covillet.

(1) At this chalet, as at the following chalets of Bailly and Jouly Bas, turn left towards Lenlevay (signs) and then turn right to continue south-east. Climb a steady slope, less steep than before, through a forest that gradually thins out, then through mountain pastures. You will come to a crossroads at a place called Lenlevay: in the distance opposite, between two peaks in the foreground, is the Haute Cime (the westernmost peak of the Dents du Midi).

(2) Turn left towards L'Etrye (sign, red and white marker post). At the mountain chalet, make a hairpin turn to the left and then follow a wooden sign indicating the direction of Mont de Grange. Climb under the pine forest and, when the canopy clears, look for a sign on the left indicating "Altitude 1840m".

(3) Turn left towards Mont de Grange via the Arête de Coicon (the indicated time of 2 hours is generous). Take a narrow path that climbs steeply between the shrubs. Continue along the grassy ridge. After a flat section, go around a buttress on the left, climbing very steep switchbacks.

Then continue steeply along the ridge or slightly below on the left (steep drop on the right) towards a sort of peak which is not yet the summit. Go past the peak (cairn) and cross over to the other side of the ridge. Traverse, continue through the middle of a rocky chaos and make a few short switchbacks to reach the summit (cross, orientation table).

(4) The descent is via the same route on the ridge.

(3) At the bottom of the Coicon ridge, turn right onto the track.

(2) At the crossroads after the Lenlevay mountain chalet, turn right and, from this point, follow the signs for "Oratoire Les Trables". This will take you back to the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots and equipment are essential. Allow between 3 and 4 hours for the climb, not including breaks.

There is a water source at the car park (S/E) and at the Lenlevay mountain chalet; however, you should still bring your own supplies.

The Mont de Grange site is a nature reserve and the mountain pastures are grazed by herds: dogs must be kept on a leash.

A 1:25,000 map is useful (at least the one accompanying this description).

Hello,
A superb hike, but for experienced hikers, with a steep incline right from the start (an average of around 30%).
Otherwise, a superb 360-degree view with the magnificent Mont Blanc on a clear day, and the ever-changing alpine landscapes that you never tire of.
We recommend it.

Hello Nicolas,

To be more precise, here is the hike that allows you to do a circular: https://www.visorando.com/randonnee-mont...

Ascent via the Bel Air ridge, descent via the Coicon ridge.

Hello Nicolas,

The circular is possible; it's even described on Visorando (I can't remember which direction).

The route via Bel Air is less straightforward: it's rockier and less well marked at the top. Nothing insurmountable, though.

Is it possible to do a circular instead of a round trip via the Bel Air ridge? If so, how difficult is it?
Thank you in advance.

Very beautiful hike with stunning views all along the way! Excellent. The only slight downside is that it's a round trip rather than a circular, but otherwise it's very, very good 👍

A long hike (especially on the way back!) but without any technical difficulties and with exceptional views. The weather conditions (cloudy when we reached the summit) improved significantly on the way down. Ideally, this hike should be done in very dry weather as the trail can become difficult in wet conditions. Starting from St-Théodule saves valuable time compared to starting from Lac des Plagnes (about 5 hours 45 minutes round trip in our case).

A superb walk in beautiful weather, despite a cool, strong wind at the summit.

This hike is recommended for its summit with magnificent views. As indicated, the panorama is 360°.
However, the route is a little long and monotonous until you reach the Lenlevay pass on a forest track. The rest of the route is steeper and more interesting, with beautiful views opening up as you climb. It can be tricky if it is wet!

For parking, do not hesitate when the road turns into a track and continue past the Saint Théodule chapel; the car park is 200-300 metres further on.
