Parking at Prétairié (car park), at the end of the road that leaves the village of Abondance and passes through Plan de Charmy.

(S/E) Take the track that starts at the end of the car park (south) and makes two turns, first turn right then left.
(1) At a fork in the track in the next bend, take a path on the left towards Lac de Tavaneuse. Climb very steeply through sparse vegetation. After crossing a stream, climb into the forest.
(2) At an intersection, continue left on a path that is initially gentle but then climbs steeply in switchbacks. Pass near a waterfall, then the Chalets de Tavaneuse (abandoned). Reach Lac de Tavaneuse.
(3) Then head right (west). Follow a path that climbs through pastures and up the valley to the Col de Tavaneuse.
(4) Climb the ridge that rises to the north-west, following a path or trail among the rocks. This will take you to the summit.
There are two options for the descent:
- Take the same route as on the way up, via the lake.
- Via the other side, as shown on the map and described below.
(5) Begin the descent via the same route as the ascent and, after about a hundred metres, turn left onto a path that goes around the summit on the right. Then descend the ridge, heading generally west.
(6) At the Passage de Savalonaire, turn right and descend steeply into the combe of the same name (north-east).
(7) At the intersection, ignore the path on the left towards the Col de Damoz des Moulins and continue descending north-east.
(8) At a crossroads, continue east towards Prétarié. Pass the Serranants chalets on your left, then turn right at the hairpin bend in the track.
(1) At the fork seen on the way up, continue straight ahead on the track and return to the Prétarié car park (S/E).
