Description of the walk

Parking at Prétairié (car park), at the end of the road that leaves the village of Abondance and passes through Plan de Charmy.

Directional signs at major intersections.

(S/E) Take the track that starts at the end of the car park (south) and makes two turns, first turn right then left.

(1) At a fork in the track in the next bend, take a path on the left towards Lac de Tavaneuse. Climb very steeply through sparse vegetation. After crossing a stream, climb into the forest.

(2) At an intersection, continue left on a path that is initially gentle but then climbs steeply in switchbacks. Pass near a waterfall, then the Chalets de Tavaneuse (abandoned). Reach Lac de Tavaneuse.

(3) Then head right (west). Follow a path that climbs through pastures and up the valley to the Col de Tavaneuse.

(4) Climb the ridge that rises to the north-west, following a path or trail among the rocks. This will take you to the summit.

There are two options for the descent:
- Take the same route as on the way up, via the lake.
- Via the other side, as shown on the map and described below.

(5) Begin the descent via the same route as the ascent and, after about a hundred metres, turn left onto a path that goes around the summit on the right. Then descend the ridge, heading generally west.

(6) At the Passage de Savalonaire, turn right and descend steeply into the combe of the same name (north-east).

(7) At the intersection, ignore the path on the left towards the Col de Damoz des Moulins and continue descending north-east.

(8) At a crossroads, continue east towards Prétarié. Pass the Serranants chalets on your left, then turn right at the hairpin bend in the track.

(1) At the fork seen on the way up, continue straight ahead on the track and return to the Prétarié car park (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots are essential. No water sources have been identified along the route (the lake water is not considered drinkable).

N.B. The path marked in purple on the 1:25,000 map between points (8) and (2) is closed by municipal decree until 30 June 2024 due to rock falls and protective works. For this reason, the route proposed here takes what was previously a very steep shortcut between points (1) and (2) instead of a gentler route via point (8). Thank you to hiker agnesdickson and Benoît V. for reporting the closure of the original trail.

Variation:
Lac de Tavaneuse alone - The lake (3) offers a beautiful wild setting and can be the sole destination of a hike.

A 1:25,000 map is required (at least the one accompanying this description).

Worth a visit

Lac de Tavaneuse offers a beautiful wild setting. In summer, it is possible to swim there (provided you are not too sensitive to the cold).

From the summit of Roc de Tavaneuse, there is an extensive view of the Chablais peaks and the Mont Blanc massif.

Wild setting in the Combe de Savolaire.

Superb hike.
Steep climb to the lake, descent from the Savolaire pass a little difficult (steep). That's all in terms of difficulties.

Magnificent ridge route between the rock and the Savolaire pass.

A very beautiful hike, this is the second time I've done it and I really enjoy it. It's a lovely circular hike with a nice little break by the lake. Please note that the route is closed between points (2) and (3) due to rock falls. At the junction (1), take the path marked as a shortcut that branches off to the left. It's easy to follow and is now well used.

A magnificent hike completed in four hours without too many breaks under a clear blue sky. There is a steep climb before reaching the lake, and a beautiful view from the pass. Be sure to turn back after the summit (I didn't read the description carefully enough and found myself above an impressive chimney, but another hiker showed me the way).

A very pleasant hike, especially with the beautiful sunshine. Magnificent scenery; the steeper first part of the route is quickly forgotten once you reach the lake... The second part is more leisurely with superb views at Roc... I agree with Francjac on the rest. The chalet near the lake was open, offering the opportunity to take a short break...

Hello Francjac, and thank you for your feedback!

At this time of year, it's not surprising to still find snowfields and slush.

A superb hike, with a fairly steep first section up to the lake, but which reveals a magnificent panorama. The second section of the lake is rockier and gentler.
However, be careful depending on the season, especially in spring, when the snow melts and there is snow cover. The path is also crossed by small streams, so there is quite a lot of mud and the ground can be slippery at times. Make sure you wear suitable footwear.
