Description of the walk

Access to the starting point: in Baden-Baden, take Leopoldstrasse towards Ebersteinburg Selbach and Ottenau until you reach the car park just before the Wolfsschlucht restaurant.

(S/E) Walk past the Wolfsschlucht restaurant and follow the road for a few hundred metres.

(1) Take the path on the left towards Ebersteinburg marked with a blue diamond. Descend the path on the right towards Wolfschlucht. Cross the bridge. Cross the path and climb the path opposite.

(2) Turn left at the fork and climb up to the Lukashütte. Beautiful view. Then retrace your steps to the fork and descend the path on the left.

(3) Cross the path and continue along the trail that turns left. At the fork at the Friedrich-Luisen Brunnen fountain, turn left towards Ebersteinburg.

(4) Turn left onto the path. At the Wolfschlucht Hütte, turn right, then shortly afterwards take the path up to the left. Walk around Ebersteinburg Castle and continue along the road down to the village of Ebersteinburg.

(5) Walk down Brunenlinde Street, then turn left onto Ebersteinburgstrasse, then right onto Hilsbrunnenstrasse opposite the town hall/school.

(6) At the village exit, take thefirst path on the left (unmarked). It turns into a zigzagging trail. Turn right at the T-junction. Leave a path on the left. Cross a path and continue on the uphill trail.

(7) At the T-junction with a large rock, turn left.

(8) At the Untere Batterhütte, take the path opposite towards Altes Schloss. Very quickly climb the Oberer Felsenweg path on the right. This path passes above the Battert cliffs. It is a renowned spot for rock climbing.

(9) Turn left to reach a cliff overlooking the landscape via the Felsenbrücke. Superb viewpoint. Return to the Oberer Felsenweg trail. Pass a remarkable 600-year-old oak tree. Please note that access is not always possible!

(10) There is a shelter at Ritterplatte. An ideal spot for a picnic with a bird's eye view of Baden-Baden. From there, take the path on the right down to the Altes Schloss. Cross the castle. At the exit, turn left and walk along the bottom of the cliffs. Impressive rock faces. Beautiful specimens of oak and beech trees. Return to the Untere Batterhütte crossroads you passed earlier.

(8) Take the first path on the right after a left-hand bend. Take the next path on the right (unmarked), then right again.

(11) Turn left onto the path (unmarked). Cross the road near a chapel. Descend the path. Remarkable oak tree Belzer v. Albertis Eiche. Hairpin bend to the left, then right again, followed by another left onto a gravel path. Turn right onto the road (blue diamond marking).

(12) After 100 metres on the road, climb a path on the left that leads to the Sophienruhe shelter. Viewpoint over nearby Baden-Baden. Shortly afterwards, take the path on the right towards Hungerberg. Then at the T-junction, turn right and shortly afterwards left. At the fork, turn right towards Ebersteinburg.

(13) Take the path on the right towards Wolfschlucht. Go straight ahead at the next fork. Descend to the left at the Engelskanzel to reach the starting car park (S/E).

Completed the route twice. Once on a foggy Sunday (zero visibility but the trail was still very pleasant, a little slippery in places in wet weather) and once on a sunny day... 🤩 Exceptional views!
Hohenbaden Castle is magnificent! (Quite crowded, though, which is the price of success).
Hike without any particular difficulty.

The route is moderately popular (taken on a Sunday morning).
Most of the route is in the forest, with superb views and several very interesting points.
The paths are sometimes difficult (rocks and steps) and a bit physical (poles are very useful).
After returning to point 8, we headed straight back to the starting point.

We did this walk on Sunday 06 November 2022. As far as the route itself and the paths used were concerned, it was just too good! Beautiful views and a beautiful forest. On the other hand, the signposting was very average, with paths without markers that you shouldn't miss and yellow diamond markings on a good part of the route that weren't even mentioned!

Many points of view and varied course. A few more physical sections but no need for poles.
Add to the description to follow the yellow diamond after Ebersteinburg Castle (closed).
Small restaurant at the castle "Altes Schloss". Very nice picnic spot and viewpoint at the Ritterplatte (also shelter).

Very nice walk.
Many very interesting viewpoints.
Varied route requiring a little physical effort on some sections, so low/medium difficulty.
Distance and duration ideal for a half-day hike.

An excellent hike. Beautiful views. However, I would recommend shortening the tour after completing the "Baden-Baden Old Castle - Cliffs" loop.
