Ruins of Ebersteinburg and Hohenbaden Castle in the Black Forest

A beautiful hike to discover the ruins of Ebersteinburg and Hohenbaden castles. Magnificent rocks (Batterfelsen) can also be found along the route. You can visit Hohenbaden Castle, which is well worth a detour, and enjoy a meal in its restaurant. There are also some beautiful viewpoints along the route.

Description of the walk

Coming from Baden-Baden, park in the car park before the Wolfsschlucht Gasthaus on the left-hand side of Rotenbachtalstraße in Ebersteinburg.

Blue Ring trail markers

(S/E) From the car park, walk past the Wolfsschlucht Gasthaus, turn left at the edge of the forest and continue to the Wolfsschlucht.

(1) Follow the path on the right-hand side, which after several bends joins the Wolfsschluchtweg.

(2) Turn right, ignore the next two paths straight ahead and on the right, and continue climbing, following the path on the left. It crosses the Wolfschluchtweg again further up, but stay on the Blue Ring trail to reach the Verbrannter Felsen shelter further up, from where there is a magnificent view of the valley.

(3) Coming down from the shelter, follow the stairs that go up on the right. Continue to the edge of the forest and the first houses of Ebersteinburg.

(4) Just before a road, take the small path that climbs up to the right and joins the road. Cross the road carefully and continue on the path that climbs up to the left. Pass the Zimmerhardt Hütte and continue towards the ruins of Ebersteinburg until you reach a road.

(5) Follow the road to the left for a few metres, then cross it carefully and follow the path opposite to the ruins of Ebersteinburg. It is possible to climb the tower of the castle. After visiting, go back down the path and go around the ruins on the left, following the road to reach the entrance to Ebersteinburg.

(6) Follow Rosenstrasse on the right. Ignore the next street on the right and continue downhill to the next crossroads. From there, keep to the right and join Ebersteinburger Strasse. Turn left and continue to the fire station. Cross the street carefully and go down the street opposite (Hilsbrunnenstrasse). It leaves Ebersteinburg and enters the forest.

(7) Follow the path that climbs to the left until you reach the next junction with a wider path.

(8) Turn left and follow this path to Untere Batterthütte, where there is a junction with several paths.

(9) Ignore the path that climbs behind the hut and follow the next one. Be careful not to miss the path that climbs to the right a few metres further on. After a slightly steep climb, the path levels out and leads to a rocky promontory with a shelter and a magnificent view of the valley.

(10) Coming down from the shelter, continue along the path on the left and, after a hairpin bend, you will reach Hohenbaden Castle, where you can eat and/or drink.

(11) Follow the path on the left that passes in front of the castle and enters the forest again. Ignore the path that descends to the right and continue on the Unterer Felsenweg. Magnificent rocks line this path, which you should follow to reach the intersection you passed on the way up.

(9) From there, follow the path that descends to the right. It crosses the forest road several times, passes a small rest area with benches and a superb view, and, after several bends, rejoins the car park (S/E).

Hike done in December, in the fog. So I couldn't enjoy the views. But the trails are very pleasant and the castles are magnificent. Hike without any particular difficulty.
There were already quite a few people at Hohenbaden Castle, so I imagine it must be extremely busy in good weather.
I'll have to do it again when the sun is shining!

A very beautiful and relatively easy hike. Beautiful forest and good trails, lovely views of Baden-Baden and the surrounding area, magnificent rock formations shaped like walls and castles where you can stop for a bite to eat in season. Take care on the stone steps near the highest point of this hike.
I measured a slightly greater elevation gain than indicated, closer to 450 metres than 380 metres.
