Description of the walk

To reach the start from Saint-Affrique, on leaving Moulin Neuf, head towards Camarès via the D12. Pass the cheese dairy on the bend, leaving the road to Montlaur on your left, then an old building and a track on your right. Continue until you reach the junction on the left for Montlaur and stop opposite on the right-hand side of the road; there is a lay-by where you can park your car.

(S/E) Head south along the uphill track which runs alongside the D12 for a few metres. Continue along this farm track until you cross a stream. Carry on to the left until you reach a Fork in the road.

(1) Take the path straight ahead; the paths branching off to the left and right are dead ends. Carry on to the next Fork in the road.

(2) Turn left and continue along the track until you come to a track coming up from the left. You’ll see the hamlet of Bennac ahead.

(3) Carry on until you reach the D902. Take it to the right, rounding a bend to the left followed by another to the right, and arrive in the middle of this bend.

(4) Leave the D902 and take the farm track to the right of the road. After a few metres, the track turns left. Follow it until you reach the D902 again, behind the Saint-Pierre-de-Rebourguil business park.

(5) Do not head down to the car park but take the track that branches off to the right into the red earth. Although the path is not very clearly marked at first, it is easy to follow. Continue to the edge of the woodland.

(6) Take the farm track branching off to the left towards the lake. Follow this track down to a ford which appears to be a dead end.

(7) Enter a pasture via this passage, which is about 1m wide, then turn immediately left to rejoin the farm track that runs alongside the lake and leads to Gazels Farm.

(8) Here, the track may be blocked by an electric fence. Use the insulated handle to open the gate and, above all, make sure you close it properly behind you. Head down to the left and pass between the farm buildings.
N.B.: This is private property. A friendly word to anyone you meet helps foster tolerance towards passing visitors. Gazels has dogs that bark a lot but are harmless unless provoked.
On leaving the farm, carry on straight ahead along the farm track until you reach the D12.

(9) Please note that the D12 is very busy and vehicles travel at high speed.
Turn right, keeping well to the side of the road. As soon as possible, head down into the field below for safety and walk along the edge of the field to complete the route and return to the starting car park (S/E).

From the road where you turn right, the path isn’t marked.
To avoid getting lost, head straight on towards the small lake across the red earth.
At the lake’s edge, you’ll find the path again and the walk continues.
Take a compass with you.

A walk undertaken by a group of 16 walkers, including one child; everyone was delighted with the route and found it fascinating.
The other walks we’ve looked at haven’t been scheduled yet.
Kind regards.
Yves.
