Circular Campels loop via Verrières

This walk, with little change in altitude, offers a lesser-known side to the Rougier de Camarès canyons. It is a journey into the world of sheep and the farmers who work to supply milk to the cheese dairies.

Description of the walk

To reach the start from Camarès, take the D902 towards Saint Affrique. Pass the hamlet of Saint Pierred’Issis (former parish) on your left. Pass La Boriette (sawmill) on your right, then the Ramondens farm. At the crossroads, pass Le Mas de Jean on your left, and take the road on the left towards Les Galamans. Pass through Les Galamans, leaving the path leading to Mas du Rouch on your right. Pass a stony track on your right, cross a bridge and, immediately afterwards, take the road on the right (hairpin bend) towards the Campels farm. Leave your car at the junction, just before the buildings.

(S/E) Set off along the road that runs alongside the large farm building.

(1) Just before reaching the houses, head down the stony path on the right. At the end of the path, take the road on the left, which you came along at the start. Pass the path leading to Mas de Rouch on your left. Continue to a crossroads with, on the right, a path leading to Puech Mech and, on the left, a road towards Verrières.

(2) Follow this road for about 500 metres.

(3) When the road bends sharply to the right, take the path branching off to the left, heading north.

(4) When you reach the River Riaudou, before the path bends to the right and crosses over the stream, admire the old footbridge, which is in good condition and is a more pleasant route to take than the submersible bridge.

(5) After passing a few vegetable gardens, at the end of the path, enjoy the view of Verrières, and take the road on the left (hairpin bend). Follow this road back to the starting point (S/E).

On arriving at Les Campels, the pond on the right is sometimes home to grey herons, egrets, ducks and cormorants.
