Trestel and Port-Blanc

This hike in Trégor is not particularly difficult. After following the coast along the customs officers' path and catching a glimpse of Île des Femmes and Île Saint-Gildas, you will discover Port Blanc before heading inland to explore the Trestel marshes.

Description of the walk

Departure: Plage du Royau car park (alternative spelling: "Royo").

(S/E) Head north-east at the end of the car park and take the Sentier des Douaniers. It runs along the coast and ends at Rue des Dunes. First turn left, then right after 20 metres and rejoin the Sentier des Douaniers. Continue along the path until it ends at Rue de Roc'h Lahz. You will arrive at Port-Blanc via Boulevard de la Mer.

(1) Offshore, you can see Île des Femmes. Continue along Boulevard de la Mer until you reach the Oratory; on your left, you will see a small granite building flanked by a cross on top of a rock. After the Oratory, take the first street on the left (on your left, there is a sign saying "Le Rocher du Voleur"). Continue to the port.

(2) From the port of Port-Blanc, you can admire Île Saint-Gildas with its buildings and, in particular, its chapel. Continue along this road. At the crossroads, continue straight on along Rue Edouard Donzelot, then turn right into Rue de la Sentinelle and left into Impasse de la Chapelle. Cross the chapel grounds and turn left when you exit. The path becomes a road as it crosses the housing estate. The street ends at Rue de Roc'h Gwen, which you take on the left and then immediately turn right.

(3) Take the path on the left. After a little over 200 metres, turn right onto the path, which becomes a street and leads to a crossroads. Turn left, then take the first street on the right, then left onto Impasse Poul Gleisker.

(4) The cul-de-sac leads to Rue du Launay, which you take by turning left. Turn left again onto Rue de Poulpry until you reach Route de la Corniche. Continue for just 50 metres and take a path on the left. When it becomes a road, follow the second path on the right and continue along the road on the left. At the calvary, continue on the right.

(5) Take the path on the left until you reach the road, which you take on the right, then left at the first street. After 70 metres, it becomes a connecting path and then Rue Chemin de Traou Woas again. You will arrive at a place called Kergall.

(6) Cross the first road, continuing straight ahead along a cross path to reach Route de Tréguier, which you cross, continuing straight ahead. Continue straight ahead at the crossroads, cross Rue de Saint Guénolé, then turn right onto Rue de Bel-Air and take a path on the left. Continue along the road via Rue du Moulin.

(7) Take the path on the right towards the Trestel marshes. Cross the river over the small bridge and continue along the path.

(8) Before a bend on the left, turn onto a small path on the right. Walk through a wooded landscape and, after a steep climb, you will come to a road.

(9) Take the stairs that end on Route de Trestel. Continue downhill to the coastal road. If the tide is low, walk down to the beach. Walk alongside the rehabilitation centre. Leave the beach by climbing up the slipway and continue straight ahead. Otherwise, continue along the road, turn left into the centre's grounds and walk to the top of the slipway.

(10) Turn right onto Rue de Poulpry, then turn left twice. The street turns into a path that runs along the sea to the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

From the start to (2) and then from the bottom of the stairs to the finish, follow theGR® 34 (marked in red and white).
From (3) to (8), follow the sporadic yellow markings.

The landscapes seen during this hike can be completely different depending on the sea level. At high tide, you will only see the large islands; at low tide, however, these islands appear to be an extension of the coast, some of which are accessible on foot at high tide.

Please note that in the last section, we cross the Trestel marshes. Although boots are not compulsory, good waterproof shoes are essential.

Worth a visit

Île des Femmes: this island owes its name to the fact that it was here that sailors' wives would come to watch for their husbands' boats returning from fishing on the horizon.

Île Saint-Gildas: this is a private island belonging to a wealthy Belgian industrialist related to the royal family. King Baudouin liked to come here to rest. Today, it is open to the public for one day only each year: the first Sunday in June. A very special ceremony takes place there: after a mass celebrated in the island's chapel, the officiant blesses the mares that are brought there on foot. Note that stallions are asked to remain on the mainland.

At the end of the hike, we discover the Trestel functional rehabilitation centre: this establishment provides care, particularly at national level, for people who have suffered serious road accidents.
Near the centre, you can admire the 10-metre-high "lighthouse" made entirely from plastic water bottles, built on the initiative of the Ouest Côtes d'Armor business club in September 2014. It was dismantled in the summer of 2016 and is now stored in a hangar by the local council.

I would only do three quarters of the route because after the chapel there is a lot of wind and you need to protect your bag.
The GR trail offers views of lots of islands and islets. However, from Port Blanc, there's a bit of a drive, but I didn't get to see it because of the weather.
It's a shame.

Hello, for the moment, it is not possible to go hiking because we are in lockdown, and therefore only
walking within 1 kilometre or 1 hour of your home! So it will be possible soon if we all take "precautions" against Covid!
It's not difficult to follow the "guidelines" that we are reminded of every day!
Take care of yourselves!
Best regards
Capali

We followed this route without GPS and had difficulties from point 5 onwards. We couldn't find any signs for Kergall and got a bit lost in the streets we crossed.
We also had trouble crossing the marsh and weren't sure we had taken the right path.
The inland route could be made clearer for people who cannot use the mobile app.
Otherwise, this walk is very interesting and varied. A great experience to share.

Some sections are a bit too muddy at this time of year. It's better to wear boots rather than standard walking shoes.

21 February 2019. Beautiful sunshine and mild temperatures. So we chose this lovely walk. Luckily, today was a spring tide, and we started at low tide, so we saw some surprising landscapes. And we finished at high tide, with yet more different landscapes on the coast.
Otherwise, the scenery is very varied. First, the coast, which is as beautiful as ever. Then, once we arrived at Port Blanc, the return trip was along small, very pleasant and varied paths, often with distant views of the coast.
In Port Blanc, the Notre Dame chapel is superb.
Crossing the Trestel marshes is surprising. It's very peaceful. Some passages were a little muddy, but otherwise no problem with good hiking boots.
No worries about the route thanks to the Visorando app, which makes it easy to find your way around.
