Crossing the Rochers de la Balme

Les Rochers de la Balme offers the possibility of an off-trail ridge crossing, which is quite long but not very technical. Several combinations are possible depending on the access routes chosen. This circular route offers a complete traverse from Tête des Chaudières to Pas Ernadant, with a steep climb (partly off-trail) via Combe de Fer and a more conventional descent via Cabanne de Carrette and theGR® 91.

Description of the walk

Departure from Corrençon-en-Vercors, south of Villard-de-Lans, reached from Grenoble or Romans. Park in the golf course car park at the end of the road.

(S/E) First head east on the Route du Clos de la Balme for about 300 metres.

(1) At a left-hand bend, turn right onto the forest path that climbs up the Combe du Souillet heading south. Stay on the main path, which then climbs up the mountainside to a plateau at an altitude of 1,400 metres.

(2) Turn left to begin climbing the Combe de Fer, first along a moderate path that leads to the speleologists' hut, on the edge of a chasm they visit.

(3) Continue south on the increasingly less marked path, which gradually heads straight up the slope to a beautiful charcoal-burning platform on the edge of the forest. (Do not be tempted by the path that starts level on the right (blue dots) and leads to the Serre du Play.)

(4) From this platform, follow the cairns to climb up more or less visible tracks in an area alternating between sharp limestone pavement, some grass and scree. As you approach the ridge above, the terrain becomes increasingly rocky and the slope increasingly steep. Keep an eye out for the cairns and try to follow the grassy areas, which are easier to climb.

(5) When you reach the ridge between Tête des Chaudières and Rochers de la Balme, at the edge of Goulot (breach on the east face), you will have a clear view. Climb northwards, going around a sinkhole on the left, which often contains a snowfield, until you reach Tête des Chaudières.

(6) From the summit, descend the path towards the south and when it branches off to the left towards the Pas de la Balme, turn right to climb back up to the pass.

(5) Climb the ridge southwards, either close to the ridge line or on the western slope, using the existing tracks to reach the summit of Rochers de la Balme (2063 m).

(7) Follow this ridge close to its edge or descending slightly on the western slope and continue down to a deep breach at the Serre du Play valley.

(8) Climb back up a little to continue following the ridge, which descends to a gap opposite the Grand Pot valley.

(9) Climb up the grassy slopes on the western side of the peaks that follow, using more clearly marked paths that are even partially signposted (blue dots). After a high point, these paths descend to Pas Ernadant, a deep gap where ibex are regularly seen.

(10) Descend the path that heads northwest. It follows a valley at the foot of a rocky ridge that leads to the Grand Pot meadow.

(11) Leave the Ranc de l'Abbé path on your right and continue in the same north-westerly direction. After a short climb through the grass, the descent resumes, fairly steeply, along a rocky outcrop on the right. The trail quickly loses altitude, then the slope levels off in the forest before opening onto the meadow where the Cabane de Carrette refuge is located.

(12) Pass the hut and turn right into the forest to join theGR® 91 at Porte Barnier.
Follow it northwards along an easy path that passes the45th parallel marker at Puits des Ravières.

(13) Continue northwards, where it becomes a path and then a gravel road, passing by the Croix de la Messe and then the Champ de Bataille, and returns to the starting point alongside the golf course and the road ski trail. (S/E)

Notes

This route is largely off-trail: the climb up Combe de Fer and the ridge walk to Pas Ernadant. Despite the presence of paths and cairns, it requires a good sense of direction and good visibility to find your way around the terrain. You need to be very confident to set out with limited visibility.

The descent via the Cabane de Carrette and theGR®91is quite long, with a flat section at the end. It is possible to descend more directly from the Grand Pot, via the path crossing the Ranc de l'Abbé, which descends the mountainside to the starting point.

As is generally the case in the Vercors, there are no water sources along the route: be sure to bring enough for the day, as the rocky terrain and sharp limestone pavements can accentuate the effect of the heat. There is only shade below a certain altitude.

This crossing can be completed in whole or in part depending on the access points chosen (from north to south):
- Combeauvieux and the Pas de la Balme (trail to the Tête des Chaudières),
- Combe de Fer,
- Cabane du Serre du Play,
- Combe du Grand Pot,
- Pas Ernadant (trail)
For a description of the different possible variations, see the posts on the "Sentier-Nature" website about this crossing, which takes place almost every year.

This route passes through multiple protected areas, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

The view along the ridge is extensive: not only over the eastern barrier of the Vercors (from Cornafion to Mont Aiguille), but also over the massifs further east: Dévoluy, Oisans, Taillefer, Belledonne... all the way to Mont Blanc.

The flora is abundant, particularly in spring, as is the fauna: Alpine vultures along the ridge and ibex, often near the gaps that provide them with access to the eastern face.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A superb hike that is well worth the effort. However, the climb is challenging, the trail is not easy to find and several sections are unstable. The climb is long and steep, but the view at the end is breathtaking! The first 200 metres of the descent are also tough, but after that the slope becomes less steep. There were very few people there, despite it being a sunny Sunday. In short, a very beautiful hike, but only for those who are a little experienced! Enjoy your walk!

A magnificent hike. The climb through the woods is very pleasant, but it's more difficult on the scree slope, where it's not easy to find landmarks, but what a reward when you reach the top!
Ibex, marmots, vultures. Superb!
It took us 6 hours and 45 minutes, not counting breaks.

A beautiful, long hike, quite challenging, completed in 7 hours of actual walking, taking the descent between Pas Ernadant and the Carette hut.

A very pleasant encounter with some young, friendly ibex in the Combe de Fer.

As for the route, after the speleologists' hut, you need to pay attention so as not to miss the path that leads eastwards to the charcoal terrace at the foot of the Combe de Fer.
The fork is not very visible and it is easy to continue south on the old path to the Serre du Play hut (which is what happened to us!). A waypoint recorded on the route at the fork would be very useful. A landmark on the ground: a few metres above the fork, on a rock, the words "LA TERRASSE" are painted in large blue letters.

Thanks to JCParavy for taking the time to post this hike online.

A very beautiful hike.
The forests you pass through are very beautiful, the climb up the rocks is a bit tough but not very long, and you are well rewarded when you reach the summit!

Good hike in terms of difficulty, starting off gradually and becoming more challenging towards the summit, followed by a long descent back to the starting point.
Great hike for the views, the landscapes are magnificent.
Also a beautiful hike for the wildlife encountered.
Really nothing but positives.
I recommend it to all experienced hikers who love wide open spaces and views of the Alps and Vercors.
However, be careful if you are prone to vertigo and be aware of the difficult level of this hike.
