Tour du Gué au Chéron in the Senonches forest

Le Gué au Chéron is a district of the Senonches National Forest. This tour starts in Tardais and leads through fields into the forest. It follows the edge of the forest, passing in front of the majestic Chêne de la Framboisière oak tree. After crossing the old La Loupe-Verneuil railway line, the trail follows the Gervaine, a stream that was canalised in the 18th century to float timber down the Avre and Seine rivers to Rouen.
The trail then runs alongside the Étang de la Bénette, managed by the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels, which preserves its exceptional flora and fauna. A long forest line crosses the Rond de Sauveloup, then joins the small road from Tardais to Laudigerie. It takes you past the lake and the Château de Tardais before reaching this picturesque village with its wash house, small church and tiny town hall. Vlaminck stayed here frequently and immortalised this view of "the road" in winter under the snow from the town hall to the church in one of his paintings.

Description of the walk

Tardais is 4 km from Senonches via the D941. Park along the road in front of the old town hall.

Yellow and red + yellow markings

(S/E) With your back to Tardais Town Hall, head left towards the church and go down Rue du Lavoir on the left. In the right-hand bend, continue to the wash house.

(1) Retrace your steps and turn right onto the narrow path that descends towards the source of the Blaise. Follow the river for a few metres, then cross it via the footbridge and walk through the communal wood until you reach a fork in the path.

Yellow markings

(2) Leave the yellow and red markings, go up to the right on Rue du Gué au Chéron and follow it to the right. Opposite No. 5, notice a small house below the road, a former clog maker's lodge, the last remaining evidence of this activity that was once so important in the Senonchois region. Continue to the next crossroads.

(3) Turn left onto Chemin du Moulin à Vent. After the houses, the road is no longer paved and leads to the edge of the forest.

(4) At the edge of the forest, first turn left for about 150 metres to see the remarkable tree marked "Le Hêtre de Tardais".

(5) Retrace your steps back to the crossroads.

(4) The route continues opposite along a path at the edge of the forest until it approaches the D155.3. Just before you get there, turn left at the start of a driveway, then take a path on the right that leads to a crossroads where you can avoid the tarmac road by turning left.

(6) Stay in the forest and follow the path along the edge of the forest opposite, close to the road. Continue along the edge of the forest until you reach the Chêne de la Framboisière, another remarkable tree.

No markings

(7) Leave the yellow markings that lead to the Framboisière on the right and continueon the left, staying on the edge of the forest. Cross the old railway line, then a small road. Continue straight ahead, still on the edge of the forest, until you reach the path coming back to the right of the Framboisière. You will find the yellow markings again.

Yellow markings

(8) Take the path on the left until the next crossroads. You will then find the GRP® coming from the right from Verneuil and going straight ahead towards Senonches (see "Things to see" section).

Yellow and red + yellow markings

(9) Follow the path opposite. Cross the bridge over the old railway line. Continue straight ahead until you reach the path between plots 59 and 60: the shortcut starts on the left. The route continues straight ahead. You will come to a small pond (private). Walk along it to the end.

(10) At the end of the pond, turn left onto a path. Follow it for about 200 m, then leave it on the right onto a winding path that leads to the D941.Cross it carefully, then follow it to the right for a few metres towards the car park, crossing it diagonally. At the information boards, follow the path that leads to the picnic tables at the Étang de la Bénette.

(11) Take the path lined with information panels about mushrooms. Cross the first footbridge. The path becomes a trail and arrives at the Ligne de la Bénette, near a ditch. Cross it on another small footbridge.

(12) After the ditch, turn left and follow the lane to Rond de Sauveloup.

(13) Cross this crossroads with multiple directions. Leave thefirst lane on the left. Follow the next straight stone lane on the left. After crossing a small valley with a stream that is thought to be the upper course of the Blaise, you will arrive at a large crossroads near the Étang de Tardais.

Yellow markings

(14) Leave the yellow and red markings. Follow the wide lane straight ahead, preferably on the left-hand side, which is generally less damp, and reach the Laudigerie-Tardais D155.3 road (elevation 227).

Yellow and red + yellow markings

(15) Turn left along the road, pass La Guilletière, then between the château and the Tardais pond. Follow the D941, cross it carefully in front of the town hall to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Waterproof footwear is recommended.

During hunting season, check withthe Perche Forest Tourist Office on 02 37 37 80 11 for hunting days and locations. (No hunting on Sundays in the national forest).

You can pass through the village of La Framboisière or start there (car park in front of the town hall) by following the yellow markings from point (9) and rejoin the route at point (8) (extension of approximately 2.5 km).

The PR® marked on the map between plots 60 and 59, then 69 and 70, is a shortcut that has never been marked. However, the paths are usable, although poorly maintained and often damp. This shortcut allows you to split the circular in two, starting from Tardais for the southern part and La Framboisière for the northern part. It starts after the point (9), a path on the left between plots 59 and 60, turns right onto the D155.4, then left between plots 69 and 70 and arrives at the edge near the Tardais Beech (5).

Worth a visit

On the way: at the crossroads, point (9), leave the path for a few metres to the right to observe a strange botanical phenomenon: on the right of the path, a stunted tree has stopped its difficult growth, abandoned its upper part and joined its more vigorous neighbour about 5 m above the ground.
