From Senonches to La Ferté-Vidame

This first stage connects Senonches to La Ferté Vidame. Through the national forest, the route takes you to the village of La Framboisière, the Château de la Hézière, near which there was once a glassworks, and, via a long forest road, leads to La Puisaye. After skirting the Étang de Rouge, the path crosses farmland and arrives at La Ferté-Vidame, the stronghold of the Duke of Saint-Simon, famous chronicler of the court of Versailles. At the entrance to the park, in the Pavillon Saint-Dominique, home to the tourist office, the Maison Saint-Simon presents his life and work. A walk in the park allows you to contemplate the vast views, the ponds and the ruins of the castle of the Marquis de la Borde, which replaced the medieval fortress, the "favourite residence" of the memoirist, in the 18th century. Recently restored, the "little castle" once belonged to King Louis-Philippe, benefactor of the village. The classical-style Saint-Nicolas Church contains the tomb of the duke and his wife.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: A weekend with the Duke of Saint-Simon

Description of the walk

Yellow and red markings

(S) From Rond de Battenberg, go up Avenue Poucin towards Notre-Dame church.

(1) Go around the church on the left and reach Rue Michel Cauty, go down it on the left, pass the EPAD and then turn left onto Route des Brosses. At the calvary, follow the road on the left until you reach Chemin du Fossé Rouge, which starts in the bend.

(2) Follow Chemin du Fossé Rouge, cross Chemin des Fours à Chaux and continue straight ahead until you reach the houses on Fossé Rouge. Turn left, then right to follow the D25 until you reach the forest entrance. Turn left onto the first path and cross the old level crossing.

No signposts

(3) Just after the level crossing, leave the GRP® and follow the path on the right that runs alongside the railway line. Cross the Ligne des Trois Pierres,

Yellow signposting

(4) At the Route des Trois Pierres, continue straight ahead, first following the track and then moving away from it to descend straight down towards the Gué de la Blaise.

(5) Cross the two branches of this small river (crossing can be difficult in wet weather). Follow the edge of the forest on your left, then turn right onto the path climbing between the fields until you reach the D156.3. Cross the road with caution and enter the forest.

(6) A few metres further on, at the crossroads, take the bridle path on the right at the edge of the road. Follow the edge of the forest to the Chêne de la Framboisière (remarkable oak tree).

(7) At the foot of the oak tree (a remarkable tree), turn right onto the path that leaves the forest and arrives at the entrance to La Framboisière. Follow the street to the left and cross the village until you reach the church.

(8) Walk along the south side of the church, pass the entrance and continue along the path that runs alongside a hedge. At the road, turn left and then right along the cemetery. Follow this small road to the entrance to the Grand Village.

(9) Continue along Rue de la Forêt. The path passes a magnificent oak tree, curves to the left and enters the forest. Turn right into the first lane and continue to a crossroads just before the bridge over the old railway line.

Yellow and red markings

(10) Descend gently towards the valley where the tiny Gervaine river flows, which was converted into a timber-floating canal in the 18th century. Cross the river and turn right onto the road. Pass in front of the Château de la Hézière, a former glassworks in the woods.

(11) After the château, continue along the road. At the bend, continue straight ahead along the path. Go around the field, following the edge of the woods.

(12) Turn left onto the wide Ligne à Jacob. Continue straight ahead, ignoring all the side roads. After a wet section, leave the woods and continue straight ahead until you reach the D318.1.

(13) Turn left and, at the equestrian centre, follow the path on the left that goes around the village. When you reach Rue de la Verrerie, turn right and go downhill to the church.

(14) Turn right before the bridge (picnic area by the river). Follow the road that soon runs alongside the Étang de Rouge. You will arrive at the pond's embankment.

Yellow and red markings ( GRP® Vallées de la Blaise et de l'Avre) and yellow

(15) Turn left onto the dyke and go back up to the D146. Turn left, then right onto the small access road to the Brosse farm. Nearby, leave the farm on your right and follow the path opposite. It heads to the left. Follow it along the edge of the fields, then turn right onto the path that leads to the Chêne aux Dames farm, which you will soon see (the signposting is difficult to follow due to a lack of signposts).

(16) At Chêne aux Dames, turn left in front of the farm, pass the buildings and follow the hedge. At the corner of the hedge, turn right. Shortly afterwards, the path turns left. Follow this long straight road. At the end, turn right along the buildings of the Jaltière farm.

(17) Turn left onto the D102. Cross a road, walk along the cemetery and arrive near the stadium.

(18) Turn right onto the path running along the embankment of the old railway line. At the end, go down to the left along a footpath. Continue left along Chemin des Carrés, which leads to the entrance to La Ferté Vidame. Take Rue de la Satinerie, then Rue Pierreuse, to reach the town hall on Place Louis-Philippe (E).
