Around Tardais

Allow a day to complete this route and visit Senonches. As it is easier to find shelter in town for lunch in winter or in case of bad weather, this route suggests setting off from Tardais in the morning, heading towards Senonches where you can picnic or eat in a restaurant, and, after visiting the town and the castle, returning to Tardais at the end of the afternoon. The route takes you around Tardais and connects it to Senonches. It is varied, passing between the castle and the lake, crossing the forest, taking you through the recently developed town centre and leading to Lake Arthur Rémy. After passing by the castle and the church, it returns across fields and through the forest again. It follows the edge of the village. Here you will find the magnificent Tardais Beech, a remarkable listed tree. At 185 years old, it is suffering, like all the beech trees in the forest, from global warming, which will cause them to disappear in the short term. So don't delay in going to see it.

Description of the walk

Departure from Tardais Town Hall on the D941, 3 km from Senonches in the direction of La Ferté-Vidame. Parking along the road in front of the small town hall.

Yellow markings

(S/E) Cross the road carefully at the pedestrian crossing and continue to the right towards the crossroads. Continue on the left along Rue de la Guilletière (D155.3). Pass between the château and the pond and follow this road to the entrance to the forest. You will arrive at a forest crossroads.

(1) Leave the road and turn left onto Allée de Sauveloup. Continue straight ahead until you reach the Ligne des Trois Pierres.

No markings

(2) Leave the marked trail, cross the Ligne des Trois Pierres and continue straight ahead until you reach the forest exit: this passage is sometimes flooded. Follow the path along the stream and arrive at Rue du Chemin de Paris near the H.L.M. roundabout.

(3) Turn left towards it, cross carefully at the pedestrian crossing, then take the first exit on the right to follow Rue de la Ferté-Vidame along the footpath that runs alongside it. At the traffic lights, cross Avenue d'Horicon. Continue along the side of the road until you reach the old railway bridge.

(4) Turn right onto the path that runs alongside the track and passes behind the gardens. Continue to Rue de la Libération.

(5) Turn left to pass under the bridge. At the entrance to Rue des Marronniers, cross at the pedestrian crossing. Turn right onto Rue de la Petite Vitesse and walk for about 150 metres, then turn left and cross the fairground diagonally. Continue straight ahead towards the war memorial and cross Rue Flandres-Dunkerque. Continue along Rue de Verdun, passing the Town Hall. At the post office, continue straight ahead onto Rue Louis Peuret and walk to the crossroads in front of the church.

(6) Turn right onto Avenue Poucin and arrive at Rond de Battenberg: park and Étang Arthur Rémy. On the right, in Square du Petit Bossard, there are more picnic tables.

(7) Turn left onto Avenue des Evés. Pass in front of the wash house and arrive at the crossroads of Rue de Launay. Turn left onto Rue du Château and enter the courtyard: Tourist Office - Museum - exhibitions. Leaving the castle, pass under the market halls, turn left and return to the crossroads by the church.

Yellow and red GRP® markings

(6) Turn right towards the church, walk along the left-hand side and follow Rue Alphonse Foucault until it joins Rue Michel Cauty at the corner of the Auberge de la Pomme de Pin. Turn left and walk downhill to the crossroads at the E.H.P.A.D.

(8) Cross Rue des Vallées at the pedestrian crossing and continue straight ahead. Turn left onto Route des Brosses. At the calvary, follow the street to the left until you reach the entrance to Chemin du Fossé Rouge.

(9) Leave the tarmac road and take the path opposite, cutting across Chemin des Fours à Chaux to reach the houses on Fossé Rouge.

(10) Turn left and, at the crossroads, turn right to carefully follow the D25 towards La Framboisière. Shortly after entering the forest, turn left onto the path. Cross the old railway line and approach the D941. Then turn right onto the track and continue to the footbridge over the ditch at the edge of the Ligne des Trois Pierres.

Yellow markings

(11) Turn right onto the Ligne des Trois Pierres, leaving the yellow and red markings. Follow it to the old level crossing on the abandoned railway line. Turn left onto the path that follows the track, then veers away from it and descends straight down into the Blaise valley. You will come to a ford, which is sometimes flooded.

(12) Cross the two branches of the river, which are usually dry as the water disappears into a chasm a little further upstream. Follow the left bank to the entrance of a path leading out of the forest and up through fields along a young hedge. Follow this path, cross the D155.3 and enter the forest opposite to reach a crossroads.

(13) Follow the path on the left, which curves around to avoid the tarmac road. Turn right onto the path along the edge of the forest and follow it to the end of Chemin du Moulin à Vent.

(14) Continue straight ahead towards a remarkable tree and pass in front of it, the Hêtre de Tardais. Continue to follow the edge of the path and, after crossing the ditch, join the path that leads to a barrier near the D941.

(15) Take the wide, straight path on the left which leads to the road. Follow this road carefully for about 200 metres, until you reach the entrance to Tardais. Continue straight ahead on Rue du Gué au Chercron. After 100 metres, turn right and go down a path into the communal woods. Follow it to the left, crossing the Blaise river on a footbridge. Follow it on the left, then go up Rue du Lavoir, which you will see a few metres to your left. Then go up towards the church and come out onto Route des Étangs. At the stop sign, turn right to reach the town hall (S/E).
