Bayuyo Tower

The Great Route 131 (GR®-131) is part of an international trail that crosses the island of Fuerteventura and the other Canary Islands. The route takes you from the centre of Corralejo, leaving it a few kilometres further on to climb Mount Bayuyo, which reveals all the beauty of the landscapes of northern Fuerteventura, as well as views of Lanzarote and Lobos.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Start from the tourist office located at the corner of Avenida Maritima and Calle de la Muelle. Walk along Corralejo beach via Calle Colon, then turn right and walk up Calle Lepanto to the end.

(1) Leave and follow Avenida Juan Carlos I on the left. Follow this avenue until you reach the "C.E.I.P. Antoñito 'El farero'" public school.

(2) Take the path on the right. Then cross a construction site until you reach the municipal water reservoir, where you will find the white/red markings of the GR® 131.

(3) Take the track to the left of the municipal reservoir and follow the "Camino Natural de Corralejo a Puntade Jandia. Sendero GR®131". Pass a car park at the foot of a caldera and follow a path on the left until you reach a sign indicating the viewpoint on the right. (Las Calderas, Cueva Natural, arenados, Hornitos, Malpais.)

(4) Turn left onto a track, then left again onto a small path that winds along the ridge to Mount Bayuyo.

(5) Pass the altimeter marker and turn right, staying on the ridge path that descends to the entrance of the quarry.

(6) Turn right into "Lugar Morro Fransisco" and then, at the roundabout, follow Avenue Juan Carlos I to the left to return to Corralejo.

(7) Turn right onto Avenida Fuerteventura, then left onto Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen to enjoy the town's shops.

(8) Take Calle Churruca on the right, which leads to the seafront, and follow it to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

(For those who do not wish to venture into the turbulent area between (2) and (3), continue along Avenida Juan Carlos I until you reach the roundabout decorated with a sculpture of a ship whose sail represents different sports. Continue along the first exit on the right, then 100 metres further on, turn right again to reach a municipal water reservoir).

Worth a visit

Crossing the "malpaís", a volcanic landscape created by eruptions from the Bayuyo volcanic chain.

Close-up views to the south of the Calderon Hondo volcano and then to the north of the neighbouring island of Lanzarote and Isla de Lobos.
