Montana Roja

A magnificent hike to the top of the red mountain, offering views of Lobos Island opposite and the white sand dunes of Corralejo Natural Park. This old inactive volcano is known as Montaña Roja because of its layers of deep red rock and stone interspersed with green rock.

Description of the walk

Parking areas are available on the FV-104.

From Corralejo Park towards the mountain, park on the right just after the end of the dunes, at kilometre marker 17.

The Red Mountain is an impressive volcanic cone located at the southern end of the Corralejo dunes.

A signpost marks the start of the main path that winds its way to the summit. Once at the top, you can walk along the edge of the crater to La Borne, at the summit of Jablito, 315 metres above sea level.

Some may be put off by this hike, but it is not as difficult as it looks. The hike takes about 50 minutes to climb and 30 minutes to descend, including photo breaks – about 4.5 km round trip.

Be careful on the descent, as the gravel is quite loose and can be slippery. I recommend hiking boots or walking shoes (definitely not flip-flops or sandals).

The car park indicated is not next to the starting point; you have to cross the ravine, which we did on the road, which was dangerous but easier.
The hike is not very easy. When we were on the ridge, the wind was pushing us into the ravine, so we had to turn back...
Without wind, it must be more accessible, but still not recommended with children.
