Start:On the road to Majanicho, park just outside the village of Lajanes, before a bend to the left. A few camels may be present, taking holidaymakers to the foot of the volcano.
(S/E) Follow the path towards Montaña Colorada, aptly named at the start or end of the day. Red, black and grey, it's very pretty! After a few hundred metres, come to an intersection.
(1) Take the track on the right to bypass Montaña Colorada and arrive at the foot of Calderon Hondo at a small roundabout. This is actually a turnaround area for the camel caravan!
(2) Continue along the path, which begins to rise in altitude as you skirt the volcano to the right. The track gives way to an unpleasant path through volcanic rock.
(3) At the crow's feet, take the left-hand path closest to the volcano and gradually veer to the left to climb up to crater level on a winding path for the last few metres.
(4) Once you've reached the crater rim, __Please be careful!
Note a few curious and greedy (Barbary) squirrels. Avoid feeding them (species classified as invasive on the island)__.
Follow the trail to the left, skirting the crater slightly below on the outside. The trail is not easy, and hand assistance may be required at times. Some sections may be difficult for those prone to vertigo.
Continue along this path to the volcano's highest point, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the entire crater. Descend a little on the other side, still following the top of the crater, and reach a fork that descends to the left at a cairn.
(5) Descend to the left along a well-marked but slippery path. Be careful!
Reach the pass where the Calderon Hondo meets the Montaña Colorada, and continue straight on to the summit of the latter.
Once at the top, continue on the same path and switch to the other side to rejoin the main path shortly before the first fork in the trail.
Descend to the right and reach the intersection with the camel trail.
(1) Continue straight on to return to the starting point (S/E).
