Starting point on the church square in Lassay-les-Châteaux. Easy parking.
(S/E) Take Rue de l'Église heading north (as you go, admire the view of the rose garden on the left, depending on the season). At the crossroads, turn left onto Grande Rue. Cross the shopping square in the town centre.
(1) At the next crossroads, turn right onto Rue du Champ de Foire. Stay on the left-hand side of the uphill street. Just after the cemetery, opposite the post office, turn left towards the crematorium on Rue des Vallons.
Continue along the street through the housing estate until it ends. A dirt track continues on from here; follow it for a few dozen metres to reach the start of the "off-road" route. Turn right onto the grassy path between two fields, marked by wooden posts bearing the coat of arms of the town of Lassay.
This leads to the D216 road. Follow it to the left for 150 metres. Then turn right onto the marked path. A few hundred metres further on, wooden knights flank the path, providing information about the myth of Lancelot.
(2) Continue until you reach the well-preserved ruins of the Château du Bois Thibault.
(3) Continue along the road to join the D117 at "La Loge". Cross the road and take the small marked path that starts just opposite at this crossroads (path not shown on the IGN map). The path descends and winds its way alongside a tiny stream, the Ruisseau de Beauchêne.
You will arrive in a small valley where you will be surprised by a few sculptures. Just after crossing the bridge over the stream, you will find several paths. To reach the ruins of the Château du Bois Frou, take the path that climbs up opposite the bridge. The climb is easy thanks to the steps that have been stabilised. The rest of this path overlooks the stream. You will know you have arrived at the ruins of the Château du Bois Frou when you see a huge barrel near the path.
(4) Walk through the fields to see the ruins of the building.
To return, take the road to the left near the ruins and pass through La Chaugonnière. Continue along this small road until you reach the D117. Then turn right towards the centre of Lassay-les-Châteaux. After about 300 metres, turn right at the first street to pass in front of the 14th-century castle, which is still in perfect condition. This is the third and last castle in the Lassay area.
(5) Go down the small street opposite the main entrance to the castle to reach Rue Lamberdière (turn right), which passes in front of the tourist office.
At the crossroads you took on the way there.
(1) Turn right onto Route d'Ambrières. After about 100 metres, turn left towards the Roseraie car park.
(6) Cross the car park and follow the path through the park to the foot of the wooden stairs. Climb these stairs and you will be back at the church square (S/E).
