The trail has recently been signposted with the number 1.
The walk starts at Place du Château de Lassay and its car park.
(S/E) After admiring this superb15th-century building, with your back to it, keep left and head towards Domfront along Rue Migoret Lamberdière. Then continue straight on three times until you reach a fourth crossroads.
(1) Turn left towards the Chapelle Saint-Roc. At the end of the village lane, cross the small bridge and follow the stream known as ‘le Lassay’. You will then arrive at the enigmatic ruins of Bois Frou.
(2) Cross the field opposite the site, turn right whilst staying on the road, then take the path in front of you (yellow arrow). At the hamlet of Bel Éclair, cross the small B-road and walk to the cave site, crossing the stream at the bridge (replica of the Grotto of Lourdes).
(3) Continue along the path, then turn left and cross the small footbridge leading to a very steep path. You have now reached the main road leading to the village of Niort-la-Fontaine. Walk to the end of the street. Turn left and head towards the centre.
(4) At the wayside cross, turn left towards the hamlet of Cormeille. Continue straight ahead along the sunken lane, then turn left at the cross, heading towards the hamlet.
(5) You will then come to the botanical trail. Keep to the right until you reach the Ruisseau de Beauchêne and head back up towards the road. Once on the road, take the track on the left. When you reach the woods at the hamlet of Les Hautes Rouves, take the path slightly to the right of the property entrance. You will soon reach a patch of woodland, then look out over the pond known as the Son et Lumière at Lassay Castle. Walk alongside it, then head back towards the castle square, taking the path that runs between the two ponds (S/E).
