Mont du Saule Trail

A very lovely walk in the Buttes d’Hardanges, a Sensitive Natural Area, between the villages of Ribay and Hardanges.
This former military zone is now a true haven of peace and offers a vast array of natural meadows, wet heathland, dry heathland, peat bogs and valley floors.

Description of the walk

Start at the hamlet known as Le Centre. Yellow signposting

(S/E) Leave the building behind you and turn left onto a path that descends gradually. Then turn right. A little further on, you’ll reach the hamlet of Ker Avray.

(1) Leave the hamlet behind. The path branches off to the right then to the left. Continue along this section, which winds its way to the D264 road, ignoring the next track on the right.

(2) Here, you have two options: either follow the route described here or take a shortcut (10.6 km). For the first option, turn left, heading northwards, and carry on straight on until you reach Carrefour du Bois.

(3) Turn right, then right again onto the track. Carry on, passing two tracks on your left, then turn right; the path descends southwards. At the end of the track, you’ll reach a crossroads.

(4) Turn right towards the hamlet of Les Terriers, which you’ll skirt slightly to the south. Back on the D264, turn left and pass the hamlet of Le Saule.

(5) Carry on and then turn right at Gué du Saule, then immediately left. You’ll be following a very pretty path lined with a succession of wattle hedges. Ignore the junction at Le Petit Hameau and you’ll arrive at Les Aulnais.

(6) Turn sharply left towards the departmental road. Pass the turn-off for Le Petit Hameau on your left and cross the departmental road with care. Take the path opposite. Turn right, then head south down the path to a small chapel (with stained-glass windows by Bernard Chardon). Turn right towards the village of Hardanges. At the church, turn right and head up the main street (Rue des Artisans). As you leave the village, you’ll come to a wayside cross.

(7) Take the road on the right opposite the wayside cross, then, very soon after, turn left onto the path. Follow it uphill until you come out onto a small access track. Turn slightly to the right, then left towards the hamlet of La Biderie, and continue straight on to La Loge Hamelin and its road.

(8) There, turn right and then left. The path winds through some woodland. Pass the access road to the wind turbines on your left, then turn left before taking a tarmac road that takes you back to the hamlet of Le Centre (S/E).

A very pleasant hike, mainly along paths. We parked in the small hamlet so we could enjoy the picnic area at the start of the hike. The only thing missing was sunshine to appreciate the autumn colours
Easy route to follow. Be careful where there is a variation

A lovely walk. Beautiful, well-maintained paths. The starting point for the walk is very well laid out. It’s just that the GPS coordinates don’t take you there. A shame. This needs fixing in the app.

A pleasant walk in hot weather as it’s shaded.
