Start from the Pont des Rôtisses, just after the level crossing towards Espenel. Park your vehicle near the village rubbish collection point.
(S/E) Go back a few metres, cross the stream and take the path that climbs to the right just after the bridge. This path climbs gradually through the pine trees on Serre Mie, describing wide bends (the IGN purple route is inaccurate). Ignore the small paths on either side and follow the main path to reach a forest track.
(1) Be quiet at this point, as there are often deer in the field opposite.
Turn left and continue along this track until you reach a three-way junction.
(2) At the three-way junction, take the track on the left which continues almost horizontally. Continue for about 300 metres.
(3) Just after the bottom of the valley, take the track that climbs up to your right. At the end of this track, continue along a path through the woods, which turns uphill once you reach the ridge. You will reach the summit of Grand Pégarnier.
(4) Several small promontories offer magnificent views of the Drôme and Roanne valleys.
From the summit, head south along the ridge. The trail turns into a track. At the intersection of four paths, continue straight ahead and join a wide forest track at the Col du Grand Champ.
(5) Turn right and descend for approximately 1.1 km.
(6) Ignore the turn-off on the right and continue down the wide forest track. After a few hairpin bends, you will come to a first fork where you should go straight ahead and join a second fork near the village of Espenel.
(7) Go straight ahead, pass the cemetery and continue on the road that runs below the village. This road makes a sharp right turn and returns to the starting point (S/E).
