Departure from the car park above the Saillans Tourist Office.
Yellow markings
(S/E) At the signpost for the Tourist Office (in front of the Tourist Office), follow the signs for Chapelle Saint-Christophe, and about 50 metres further on, at the signpost for the pedestrian and mountain biking routes, follow the signs for Tour de Chabrier (Chemin de Trélaville). You will arrive at a fork just before the cemetery.
(1) Turn right and walk along the cemetery. The street turns right, and about a hundred metres further on, take the path on the right (Chemin des Trois Croix). This path winds its way up through a beautiful coniferous forest. Follow the yellow markings carefully as there are many paths and shortcuts, and watch out for mountain bikes (shared paths or crossings).
(2) At the end of the climb, the path turns onto the eastern slope of the hill above Les Rayes. Magnificent view of the Massif des Trois Becs. Continue along the path, which remains level, heading north, and about 200 metres after passing above the houses of Chabrier, turn right heading due east. Stay on the marked trail and do not take any paths or tracks on the left. After passing through rubble and stored equipment, you will reach the wide access track to Chabrier.
(3) Turn left and continue to the Col des Vallons, about 600 m away.
No markings
(4) Turn right and walk past the house (please respect the property). About 200 m after the house, you will come to a fork.
(5) Take the left fork. The path gradually descends to the bottom of the valley, staying roughly on a shoulder, then turns south. After a long traverse along a balcony, you will reach a crossroads above Fond de Chabrier.
(6) Ignore the first path on the left and take the next one, heading north-east, to cross over to the Vercheny slope, facing the Vercors (views of the Montagne de Glandasse at But Saint-Genix) and Serre-Chauvière. Descend to the Pas de la Bernarde fork.
White signs with "Saillans" written in red letters.
(7) Turn right towards Saillans. The path continues level, heading south, above Baume Rousse, then, at a fork, turns right towards the west (signposted "Saillans"). At the next fork, turn left onto the path that descends to the Bessonnes shoulder and, after a few wide bends, arrives at a track suitable for vehicles.
(8) Turn right and stay on the main track (some signs are missing). After passing a shelter on the right, reach the bottom of the valley at Liotard.
(9) Continue along the track on the other side of the valley. After about 1 km, look out for a small path on the right, in the middle of the grass (sign). This is located about 50 metres before a hairpin bend in the track.
(10) Take this small path on the right, which is not marked on maps. After climbing for about 100 metres, the tiny path levels out above the valley, then Haut de Rourebel, and soon overlooks the Drôme and the D93 road for about 150 metres, at the narrowest point of the valley between Saillans and Vercheny (viewpoints). Do not get too close to the edge at this point and be careful. The path then begins its descent towards Saillans and arrives at some vineyards.
(11) Walk along the vineyards on the right and reach the D493 road. Follow it to the right towards Saillans.
(12) Pass the memorial to the fighting of 21 July 1944, then walk along the left side of the road tunnel. Continue to the Tourist Office about 200 m further on the right, then to the car park above (S/E).
