Teysachaux and Le Moléson from Belle Chaux

Moléson is a popular peak in the Fribourg Pre-Alps because it offers superb views of Lake Geneva and the surrounding mountains. This hike takes you up the mountain, first passing the steep summit of Teysachaux and then following a pleasant ridge trail.

Description of the walk

Starting point and access:
From Châtel-Saint-Denis (first exit off the motorway when travelling from Vevey to Bern), head for Les Paccots resort. Drive through the resort and, at the fork at the exit, take the road on the right towards Creux des Tables. Ignore the first road on the right and then thesecond on the left, and stay on the main road towards Belle Chaux.
Park in Belle Chaux (alpine chalet), just before the left-hand bend that leads to the Buvette du Vuypey (several parking spaces on both sides of the road).

Directional signs at all major intersections + walking signposts + white-red-white markings (at altitude).

(S/E) Head towards the chalet (north), cross the alpine pasture fence and go around the chalet on the right. Continue west on a path along the mountainside.

(1) At the signpost, turn right towards Teysachaux. Follow a well-marked path close to a fence on the left (note a footbridge and the Chalet de La Chaux beyond, which will be the way back). Follow steep switchbacks, first under spruce trees then across a lawn.

(2) Pass a fence perpendicular to the one you have been following. The path then continues steeply downhill, along the previous fence. Pass a second perpendicular fence and cross several rocky escarpments (it may be useful to use your hands). You will reach the summit of Teysachaux, topped by a metal cross.

(3) Find the path on the right that leads down the other side. The route is still steep between the rocks. Further down, follow the gentler slope of the ridge and arrive at the Col de Tremetta (not named on the map; signpost).

(4) Climb back up following the ridge towards Moléson (north-northeast). Leave a hillock topped with a cross on your left. Climb gently up to the ridge, following a fence on your right.

(5) Pass through a turnstile and now follow the fence on your left. Climb up a ridge topped by a cross and descend. N.B. A path on the southern slope allows you to avoid this climb. It starts shortly after the turnstile but is easier to find on the way back.

(6) At the intersection with the path climbing up from Tsuatsau, continue along the ridge towards Molaison and the cable car station, which is clearly visible. Pass under the station and bear left to quickly reach the summit topped by a geodetic signal.

(7) The descent follows the same route as the ascent to the Tremetta Pass. Stay on the ridge, ignoring the paths that descend, and don't miss the turnstile.

(5) Continue to reach the Col de Tremetta.

(4) At the pass, take a path on the right that descends towards the Col de Villard and Les Taccots. Go through a gate, walk past the Chalet de Tremetta on your left and go through a turnstile.

(8) Then turn sharply left and follow the path that descends below the chalet. Next, follow a path that winds downhill and runs alongside the stony valley at the foot of Teysachaux.

(9) You will come out onto a paved alpine track. Follow it downhill to the left. Go through a metal gate and, at the next junction, turn left towards Belle Chaux.

(10) After about 250 m, leave the tarmac and turn left uphill onto a stony track. Join the tarmac further on and walk alongside the La Chaux chalet on your right.

(11) Continue along a slightly downhill path for about 200 m. Then turn left, go through a fence and you will soon come to the signpost at the start of the hike.
N.B. After the chalet, you can also take a path on the left of the track which, without losing any altitude, leads to the stile you saw on the way up. Cross the stile and descend to the signpost.

(1) Continue east on the mountain path taken on the way up, go around the Belle Chaux chalet on the left and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots are essential. There are no water sources on the route: bring your own supplies accordingly.

Allow a good hour to reach the summit of Teysachaux. Then allow around an hour and a half to reach the summit of Moléson.

The route crosses mountain pastures that are used in summer: if there are herds of animals, keep your dog on a leash. After each fence crossing, close the gate behind you.

Warning:
Between points (1) and (4), the route is extremely steep and includes some steep passages between rocks. For this reason, the hike is classified as difficult. Only attempt this hike in dry conditions.

Hello Etienne,

The summit of the Moléson is at 2002 m, which is not so different from the altitude indicated, but the 2000 m mark has been passed all the same!
There was no snow at the summit, but there was a little on some of the shady slopes (on the way back).

Have a great day and thanks again for sharing
Clémence

Hello Mareteaupilon,

Thank you for your feedback and comments. I'm pleased to read that you enjoyed this hike (despite the steepness of the climb to Teysachaux).

I was in the area during the last week of October and these two summits were well covered in snow. By the end of November, everything had melted and it hadn't snowed again?

The altitudes given in the list of WPs are estimates only, so errors are possible, but only to a moderate extent.

Super hike and well signposted!
The 1st part up to Teysachaux is a real thigh-warmer, but it's worth it with the 360° views and peaks as far as the eye can see.
This 1st section is less busy than the Moléson section. That said, I did this hike at the end of November, so it was out of season.
Thanks for the route!
Ps: the altitudes indicated on the specific points are not entirely accurate.
