On the lands of Autry

Walk through the vast meadows between Autry and Condé-les-Autry (some of which are designated as a Natura 2000 site) and discover some of the war’s key events as you pass through the hamlet of La Mare aux Bœufs, which was a strategic point during the Great War.

This trail can also start at the Mare aux Bœufs wash house, where you can choose to take the circular route or just the 5 km of the historical section. This part of the route features historical panels about the Great War.

Description of the walk

Yellow footpath marker no. 11

(S/E) To start from Autry, from the village square, take the D21 on the right towards Sainte-Ménéhould and cross the two bridges over the Aisne, located in the heart of the village.

(1) Turn right past the campsite, then follow the path through the woods along the Aisne valley to reach Condé-lès-Autry.

(2) At Condé-lès-Autry, take the D221 to the left, then immediately turn right 70 metres further on to join a wooded path alongside a stream towards the hamlet of La Mare aux Bœufs. Pass through the former German camp “Heckhoff Lager” and continue along the narrow path. Then cross a meadow and head towards the hamlet of La Mare aux Bœufs.

(3) On the main road, you have a choice: on the left, head to the wash house equipped with a picnic table and historical information boards; or, to follow the suggested route, turn right and head up towards the centre of the hamlet on the D221a.

(4) At the junction, leave the road and continue along the path opposite. A few hundred metres further on, leave the path and take another path on the right at the junction. Then continue straight ahead.

(5) At the junction with the D221:
- turn right for the 5km alternative route to reach Condé-les-Autry.
- or, alternatively, turn left for the circular route. Follow the road for 1 km, crossing the Pont d'Ouchery.

(6) Turn right towards the Bois de Moyon and Autry. Continue straight ahead on the same path.

(7) At a place called Corbeny, there is an information board about the Autry meadows. Take the small road on the left and cross the bridges over the Dormoise. Then head straight up.

(8) Take the roads on the right at the next two junctions, then take the D21 road which descends to the right and leads to the square in Autry. It is also worth walking up to the church to admire the panoramic view over the Aisne valley (S/E).
