Between Mémoire and Val d'Aire towards Châtel-Chéhéry

Nestled between the Aire Valley and the forest, this route starting from the village of Châtel-Chéhéry and its elegant château will take you to the outskirts of Apremont-sur-Aire to discover a significant memorial site: the German military cemetery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Description of the walk

Park in Rue des Goulets.

Follow footpath signpost no. 21.

(S/E) In Châtel-Chéhéry, from the starting sign at the junction of Rue Laloy-Chenet and Rue des Goulets, turn left towards a sunken lane. At the next Y-junction, keep to the right and continue straight on. Then stay on the white track until you reach the edge of the woods. Enter the woods and follow the forest path for 2 km.

(1) When you reach a junction with a forest road, turn left and continue along it until you reach the junction with the RD4.

(2) First turn right then left onto the RD4 and continue straight on for 800 m. Then, at the wide left-hand bend, leave this road and take the white track opposite.

(3) At the junction, stay on the Haute Chevauchée forest road until you reach the junction with the RD442.

(4) Then turn left onto the RD442 and walk as far as the German military cemetery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) at Apremont-sur-Aire.

(5) Opposite the cemetery, head down a small forest path. At the grassy track, turn left. You will then come to a section of path through the undergrowth, leading out onto a wide dirt track.

(6) Stay on this dirt track until you reach the RD442. At the road, turn left to reach the village of Apremont-sur-Aire.

(7) At the stop sign in the village, turn left onto the Grande Rue. Pass the town hall and the church and continue to the edge of the village. Follow the RD42 for about 2 km.

(8) Croisette stream.

(9) At the entrance to Châtel-Chéhéry, turn left up the Chemin Rural de la Bosse. Then continue straight on into Rue Corbion. At the junction, continue straight on into Rue Laloy Chenet. Pass the town hall and the church, then return to the original junction at the start (S/E).
