Parking in Sewen near the micro power station between 28 Rue d'Elbach and 33 Rue Gaessel. See important note in Practical Information.
(S/E) To the right of 33 Rue Gaessel, take theGR®®531, a trail marked with a blue rectangle. Climb towards Fennematt along the right bank of the Doller. After about 1 km, you will come to a crossroads.
(1) A small footbridge on the right (see Practical Information) allows you to enjoy the river. Return to theGR®®531, which climbs to the left and moves away from the riverbank. The slope is steeper here. When it levels out, you will come to a forest path and, about 50 metres further on, a crossroads.
(2) Leave theGR®®531and turn right towards Langenberg via the Red Triangle trail. When you reach the tarmac road of La Fennematt, turn left and continue for a few dozen metres.
(3) On the right, take the wide Wagenstall path marked with a red triangle. Head west on this beautiful path, which approaches the stream and then passes by a wooden bridge. Turn right uphill towards the waterfalls and Grand Langenberg.
(4) The climb is steep, but the waterfalls are well worth the effort. After a few hairpin bends, go through a gate and leave the forest.
(5) You will reach the Grand Langenberg forest road. Head towards the farmhouse inn and, just before you reach it, turn right, still following the red triangle. The path climbs, turns right and joins a crossroads overlooking the farm.
(6) Leave the Red Triangle trail (see variant 1 in Practical Information) and continue straight ahead on the unmarked grassy path. It joins the forest road. Follow it for about 500 m to the junction with the D466.
(7) Cross the road, ignore the marked Chevalet Rouge path running parallel to the road and head opposite towards the unmarked path that enters the forest. This is a wide, relaxing forest path that skirts the summit of Grand Langenberg to the north. It follows a contour line until it begins a slight descent.
(8) Be careful: as soon as you see the red-white-red rectangle sign, turn sharply onto the path that descends to the right. Keep going along this path surrounded by mossy rocks, and you will reach a crossroads after about 600 metres.
(9) Leave the red and white rectangle markings and follow the red triangle markings towards Hinter-Alfeld. You will soon reach the D466. On the other side of the road, you will find the red triangle trail, which descends steeply (be careful of gravel and stones). When the slope levels out a little, you will come to a barrier.
(10) Go through the chicane barrier. You will leave the forest on the Red Disc marked trail towards Lake Alfeld. Cross the road and the stone bridge over the Alfeld stream. Find the Red Disc trail on the right behind a chicane and, further on, the forest after a wooden barrier. You will then begin to skirt the lake along its northern shore.
(11) Continue enjoying the views of the lake and the vegetation. As you approach the dam, after a footbridge, you will come to a crossroads and an information board.
(12) On your left is the start of the Chevalet Rouge path to the Wasserfall waterfall (see variant 2). Pass the curious rounded rocks, evidence of glacial erosion, and continue straight on towards the Rectangle Bleu trail (GR®®531) towards Sewen, then turn right and descend along the Seebach (the lake stream).
(13) Get closer to the Seebach to admire its remarkable gorges and waterfalls. The path then moves away from the stream to join the Rectangle Bleu trail towards Sewen. After a marshy area and a beautiful rainforest, follow the shore of Lake Sewen.
(14) Shortly after the end of the lake, theGR®®531descends into a meadow on the right. Cross the small bridge on the right to reach the town centre. Head towards the church, behind which you will find the picturesque Rue Gaessel. Walk up this street for about 500 m (S/E).
