The Ballon d'Alsace from Sewen

The Ballon d'Alsace is accessible from several points. Its summit is accessible by road. The more athletic may wish to attempt this circular route starting from Sewen, which offers a few points of interest, notably Lake Alfeld. The return route follows the ridges for the most part, offering views that sometimes stretch as far as the first Alpine peaks when the weather permits. There are numerous shortcuts available to shorten the circular route.

Hike accessible via Sewen station (11 GD RUE).

Keep left to reach Lake Alfeld and its dam.

(3) There is a picnic table here. Follow the path to the right towards the Rundkopf. At the junction, turn left towards the waterfall (climb a ladder).

(4) Enjoy the waterfall if it is flowing. Return to the previous junction and keep left onto a steeply sloping path. At the track, continue left, cross a stream and pass in front of the Schaling Hutte.

Taken over two days with a night in the magnificent unguarded cabin 5 km from the start. The next day, the final climb to the Grand Ballon is extremely steep and reserved for experienced hikers, but the view is splendid. The section after the last viewpoint is technical, but otherwise the hike is magnificent. Much of it can be done on snowshoes. I was wearing crampons, but the second half of the hike is in the shade in the afternoon, so there is still a lot of snow. 24 km on the clock.

Hello
A small suggestion.
it would be useful to indicate places where it is possible to eat, for example, on this route, farm inns near a kilometre point or waypoint in detail
Kind regards

A lovely circular walk with varied scenery. It’s not particularly difficult, though the elevation gain and distance might be a challenge for those who aren’t used to it. We completed the circular walk in 7½ hours, but it was a little longer than expected in terms of distance (an extra 2 km).
