Park in the Lerchenmatt car park, 1.7 km from Sewen church via Rue de Elbach, after crossing a bridge over the Wagenstall stream.
(S/E) From the car park, continue for a few dozen metres along the Lerchenmatt road and turn right onto the Wagenstall path, signposted with a Red Triangle.
(1) Walk past a wooden bridge, then turn right uphill towards the waterfalls and the Grand Langenberg. The climb is steep, but the waterfalls are well worth the effort.
(2) In front of the farmhouse inn, leave the Red Triangle markings and turn left onto the Grand Langenberg forest track.
(3) After 1.2 km, at the bend, leave the forest track to the right and take the steep, sloping path that turns to the left. (If this path is impassable, see practical information). 200 m further on, you’ll cross a track suitable for vehicles and head up the Red Cross-marked path towards “Wisskritt”. Stay on the Red Cross path until you reach the Wissgrut hilltop.
(4) Turn right towards the summit of the Wissgrut to enjoy the 360° panoramic view, then head due south along the Red Rectangle-marked path (GR®®5) towards the Wissgrut farmhouse inn. Further south, you’ll reach the summit of the Tremont (Tremontkopf) and its beautiful beech trees. Head down through the forest for 500 metres; after a slight incline, beneath a cluster of tall beech trees surrounded by small firs, you’ll reach a Y-junction.
(5) Leave theGR®®5, which continues to the left, and take the path on the right, which leads after 150 m to a path marked with a Red Triangle and to the Roche du Serpent.
(6) You’ll need to climb over a few rocks to enjoy a panoramic break at the summit. Climb back down the rocks and take the path on the right, which rejoins theGR®®5(marked with a Red Rectangle). Pass the Unnamed Pass.
(7) At the Col du Hirtzelach, numerous paths criss-cross. Continue along theGR®®5. As you emerge from the forest after the zigzag barrier, you’ll reach the Lochberg moorland. To the left below, a building site has replaced the Fennematt farm; the Highland cattle from the Lochberg farm-inn graze in the meadows.
(8) A path (a possible shortcut to (10) – not always passable) descends to the left towards theGR®®531(Blue Rectangle). Continue to the right towards Lochberg Barrenkopf; you’ll see the farm below. Carry on to the Lochberg Pass and its wayside shrine.
(9) Before the pass, turn left towards Fennmatt Lochberg. You’ll reach a crossroads.
(10) Take theGR®® 531, signposted with a Blue Rectangle, towards Sewen on the left.
(11) Stop at the source of the Doller on the left, then carry on towards Fennematt.
(12) Before the building site, on the site of the demolished farmhouse-inn, on the right near the Langlois Monument, a path marked with a Red Ring climbs towards Dolleren via the Schlumpf. Climb up to a fence on the ridge.
(13) Turn left after the hairpin bend onto the panoramic path marked with a Blue Rectangle and a White Rectangle. Stay on the northern slope close to the ridge line, enjoying wide, unobstructed views, until you reach the Graber shelter, where you’ll rejoin theGR®®531(Blue Rectangle).
(14) Take a break at the shelter, then rejoin theGR®®531, passing the Red Ring-marked trail on your right, and continue the descent through the forest towards Sewen. The trail crosses several forest tracks before joining a wide path, which you follow to the right, still following the Blue Rectangle markings.
(15) At the T-junction, leave theGR®®531by turning left onto the path marked with a Red Triangle towards Langenberg. After the bridge over the Doller, you’ll reach the car park (S/E) .
