On the heights of Le Sialet

A short, challenging and perfect walk starting from La Monta, passing through the splendid Bellevue meadow—which certainly lives up to its name—then heading towards Le Sialet, to finish at the highest point of a superb wild meadow.
Splendid views of the Chartreuse, Pinéa, Chamechaude, and the valley too! And directly opposite, the majestic Moucherotte, the Vercors stretching out behind it, and the bustling town far below.
As beautiful as a painting by Jean Achard! And just a stone’s throw from the town...

Description of the walk

Park in the designated spaces on Rue des Brieux, past the recycling bins.

(S/E) Head towards the bridge over the Vence stream, turn left then right at the foot of the Hôtel Désirat. Follow the signs for Route de Quaix, then after barely 10 metres, take the steps leading up to the left.

You will come out onto Route de Proveysieux (D105); climb over the crash barrier and follow the road to the left for about 40 metres. Leave the road at the bend and head left towards the relay mast and the water tanks.
Walk past the reservoirs, then continue along the path that winds through the woodland and leads to the hamlet of Bellevue.

(1) On reaching Bellevue, take the road on the left for 50 metres until it ends. Follow the path to the right for 10 m, then take a sharp left onto a path that goes round the last house. Continue for a few hundred metres, ignoring a path branching off to the right. Below on the left, you can see the E2V factories and the Saint Egrève retail park.

(2) Leave the path that continues along the hillside and head up to the right along a steep little track, which leads to the bottom of the Bellevue meadow.

Head straight up through this large, splendid meadow overlooking Saint-Egrève, then, just before the summit, take the path running along its left-hand side. After 200 m, the path becomes quite steep, but after a bit of effort, you’ll emerge onto a wide path coming from the peatland.

(3) Take this path on the left, pass an abandoned barn after 50 m and continue left towards Le Charpenet. After about 300 m, following a final short steep section, you reach the Sialet meadow.

(4) Just after crossing the fence, leave the path that continues straight on towards the Sialet chalet, and head straight up the slope into the meadow on the right, quickly passing an old ruined barn. At the top of this first meadow, join a lovely little path, typical of alpine trails, which gives the impression of already being deep in the mountains.

This path soon joins another, slightly wider one, which you cross to continue straight up the slope through the meadow to its summit.

(5) A wild, splendid, moving panorama of the Chartreuse and Vercors, and the mighty Pic de Belledonne peeking out between Néron and Saint Eynard.

Return via the same route as the outward journey, with a splendid, sweeping panorama throughout the descent, giving the impression of plunging into the valley, particularly when descending the Bellevue meadow.

Head towards Rue des Brieux (S/E).

We didn’t come across many people on 8 May and we really enjoyed the views at the top of the meadow, as well as at a few other spots along the way.
For the return journey, we took a less steep route down, turning off at point 3 to head towards Le Mollard and then La Rigaudière. This detour took us past the magnificent Fontaine Fournache and through two very charming villages with lovely views once again... though there was a bit of road walking too.
In short, a lovely idea for a walk within easy reach...

Everything is explained in the presentation of the walk, which accurately reflects reality.
Be careful when you reach the last meadow where the small refuge is located: take the path on the left that runs horizontally, or slightly downhill, to reach the viewpoint.
There are quite a few people near the summit, as it is easy to access even with children when starting from the hamlets of Proveysieux.
All in all, it's a lovely little breath of fresh air starting from Saint Egrève, with a magnificent panorama as the final reward!

Enjoy the walk.
We climbed higher for the view.
A bit monotonous.

To get to the viewpoint, it’s easier to go via the hamlet of La Rigaudière

Hello,

First of all, thanks for the guide and also for these lovely photos of an area where I love to go hiking.

Just a few quick comments:

  • Between (1) and (2), the path you’re supposed to ignore on the right is also a way to reach the “large and splendid meadow overlooking Saint-Egrève”. It’s certainly a bit steeper than the route in the guide, but honestly, it’s no problem at all.
  • Between (4) and the ruins of Brulin, you can head back down, just for a change of scenery, via some good paths further east.
  • I’m not familiar with the viewpoint at the (5) point, and it really makes me want to go back and see it. But it’s also possible to reach the grassy ridge of Roche Traversier nearby, and you’ll have no trouble enjoying a magnificent panorama there too. And you can go even higher, but that’s the subject of another guide...
