On the hillsides of Fonbeauzard

It’s not quite the countryside, but it’s not the city either. Despite its proximity to the city, this walk near Toulouse offers plenty of greenery and a breath of fresh air.

Description of the walk

Car park at the Fonbeauzard Village Hall.

(S/E) On the left-hand side of the hall, head towards the River Hers and take the tunnel on the left to pass under the bridge. Follow the path along the riverbank through the field.

(1) Continue along the path to the left, following the stream without crossing it, until you reach the RD59 at the end.

(2) Cross the road and take the path opposite, with the stream now on your left. At the end, cross the footbridge and follow Rue Charles Gounod to the right.

(3) At the bend, take the small path on the right over the stream to reach the back of the ACTION shop and the car park. Follow the access road to the right until you reach the D59.

(4) Follow the road to the left until you reach the next roundabout; go round it on the left at the pedestrian crossing and continue straight ahead for about 150 m. Take thefirst road on the left, which turns into a grassy track after the barrier. Join the tarmac road at the travellers’ site and cross over to continue straight on along the road that climbs uphill.

(5) At the top of the hill, after the last house, take the small path on the left and follow it for a long way as close as possible to the stream, then cross it at the junction and continue along the path to the right.

(6) Just before a hedgerow in a copse, follow the path on the left which climbs steeply up to the tarmac road (Chemin de la Plane).

(7) Turn right. Go round a bend to the left, then a bend to the right, followed by another bend to the left

(8) Turn right onto the road (Chemin Chaud) which runs alongside the grounds of a clinic, then turn right again onto the road that passes in front of the cemetery. After the cemetery, continue straight on along the path until you reach Chemin des Bordettes.

(9) Follow it to the right until it reaches the road, where it becomes Chemin des Mottes. Walk for about 1 km.

(10) Take the path on the right. Go round a bend to the right, then follow the path as it bends sharply to the left whilst going downhill. On the next uphill stretch, go straight on at the crossroads and follow the edge of the woods until you reach the road called Chemin de la Côte Blanche.

(11) Head down the road to the right and, at the end, turn left until you reach the Stop sign. Continue to the right, passing the castle-town hall in Launaguet, and at the traffic lights, cross over to continue straight ahead. Pass the Post Office and turn right onto Rue Fignac. Follow the cycle path running parallel to it and, at the junction, continue straight on alongside the sports ground.

(12) Take the path on the left at the barrier and keep going straight on. Cross all the junctions and continue towards the La Saudrune industrial estate. Carry on along the path that passes in front of the sewage treatment works and follow it alongside the River Hers.

(1) Go straight on, pass under the bridge again, then turn right to return to the car park (S/E).

Although very urban, this route is varied and offers a real change of scenery: paths along streams, narrow roads, hills, woods, housing estates, etc. Despite over a week without bad weather, some sections of the paths – particularly near the Ruisseau de Carles – are barely passable as they have been ‘wrecked’ by trial motorbikes. A walk best done in very fine weather and on dry ground. Signposting is only partial along the route, but with the app’s GPS, there’s no difficulty in following the route. Two historic castles worth visiting nearby.

I chose this route for trail running and had already done part of it a year ago whilst walking. A very pleasant route through the countryside with beautiful scenery and views of the Pyrenees in places. There’s a tiny bit of mud, so it’s best not to do it in wet weather.
It’s tricky to follow the route properly whilst running, but with the GPS track it works a treat ^^.
Thank you very much.

I went on the walk on a sunny Tuesday afternoon; we were on our own.
I got lost after point 8 (take the first path on the left) but managed to get back on track at the Travellers’ Welcome Centre.
The walk isn’t particularly interesting. You end up walking along tarmac roads far too often, some of which have heavy traffic.
Once I arrived, I realised that the ‘Fonbeauzard Mermoz’ stop on the Tisséo 29 bus is right next to the start of the walk. I regretted having driven all the way from Toulouse.

We went for a walk one Sunday afternoon in October, in fine, dry weather, and this route – which was actually quite interesting – was fairly busy.
In winter weather, when the ground is soggy, it can certainly be rather unpleasant given the muddy sections and large puddles, all due to the clay soils in our region....
There are a few tarmac sections, though, but not too many.
