Standaert Straete - Mont des Récollets from Cassel

As you descend north of Mont-Cassel, you'll enjoy the beautiful Flanders countryside.
Although there are long stretches of tarmac, the roads don't have much traffic.

Description of the walk

Start in front of Cassel cemetery.

(S/E) With your back to the cemetery, turn right in a north-westerly direction. At the bend in the Rue du Maréchal Foch, turn right into Chemin du Chapître, ignoring the 1st street on the right, which runs down the side of the cemetery. The street ends at the bottom of a flight of stairs.

(1) Climb the steps to the chevet of the collegiate church. Follow the collegiate church to the Place de Cassel. Pass the Hôtel de Ville and take the first street on the right. Continue along Rue Alexis Bafkop. Cross Rue de Bergues to continue on Rue de l'École.

(2) At the end of Rue de l'École, turn right and 30m further on, take the Staeck Houver path, which leads down to the other side of Route de Dunkerque. Take care in wet weather, as this path is slippery.

(3) Pass the Staeck Houver chapel. 100m after the chapel, the path widens into a farm track. Follow it to the main road, then cross it and continue straight ahead. The path joins the D218 or Route d'Oudezeele. Take this road to the right for 1.3km (be careful).

(4) At the crossroads (wide left-hand bend), turn right onto the Standaert Straete. Follow it to the end for approx. 1.8km. Quiet street, lined with beautiful properties, with little traffic (mainly local residents). Enjoy lovely views of Mount Cassel.
Variant : possibility of shortening the walk, after 950m from the crossroads, turn right onto the GRP® Monts des Flandres.

(5) At the stop sign, turn right onto the D948 for 250m (be careful).

(6) At the bend, leave the road and turn left onto the Sentier des Récollets or GR®128. Ignore the path which rises to the right and continue on the GR® at the edge of the wood for 900m to the D916.
Cross the road to continue straight ahead on the GR® which bends to the right and climbs towards Cassel.
The path leads to a small street which climbs to the right. Take this street, crossing the paved road or Avenue Albert Mahieu. Turn right onto Chemin de la Perche and follow this street for 110m.

(7) At the T junction, turn left and immediately look for the path down to the right, which descends into the woods along the Chemin de la Perche for 270m.

(8) Turn left onto a path that climbs, widens and runs alongside the cemetery. At the end of the paved road, turn left to find the Cassel cemetery (S/E).

Practical information

The Place de Cassel and its surroundings are in the "zone bleue" (you need a blue disc to park for a limited time). Parking is difficult, especially during school holidays. You'll have to look for a free space in the surrounding streets.
Numerous cafés and restaurants in the square.

In the nearby area

(1) The Collegiate Church at the end of the staircase.
The façades of the Place de Cassel.
The Musée départemental de Flandre, museum dedicated to Flemish culture.

(3) Staeck Houver chapel. Translation of the plaque written in Flemish:
"O passer-by, whether you be noble, rich or powerful, do not forget to devote a little of your time to the memory of Mary, Consoler of the Afflicted".

Au sommet du mont Cassel : viewpoint from the Place du Château, le Moulin de l'Étendard

Nearby: Jardins du Mont des Récollets: 1936 route de Steenvoorde 59670 Cassel. Remarkable Flemish-style gardens.

The hike is not very long, so despite the difference in altitude it is still accessible. You can visit the mill just a few decametres from the track.
Be careful, though, as some sections can be slippery in wet weather.

A few imperfections in the descriptions.
Once we were told to turn right at the stop sign but in fact it was at the second stop sign.
We drove 10 km instead of 7.5 km.
Fortunately I know Cassel. It's still a magnificent place and a beautiful walk.

Nice walk overall. Some parts of the paths under the woods lack maintenance in terms of bramble cutting. Long trousers are recommended.

This app really helped us to follow the route. Without it we wouldn't have been able to do it. Very well explained and detailed 😉

The detour via the mill and the panorama is clearly mentioned in the hike notes. It is difficult to hike around Mont Cassel without using them, unless you go down and then back up the same way. There aren't many footpaths to make a reasonable loop in this area.

The start of the hike is nice and well described, but the route doesn't take you past the mill and the panorama, even though it's a must-see, so it's a good thing we made a detour there. What's more, once you're at the bottom of the mountain, there's virtually nothing but the edge of the main road, which is very dangerous and uninteresting. I wouldn't recommend this hike at all unless you're a car driver.

Route completed in dry weather, lovely scenery, alternating sun and shade. Finish with a return to the Place de Cassel and enjoy a drink on the terrace, the best 👌

I was using this application for the first time and it was great. Everything was very well signposted and the route was perfect. As a group of beginners, we completed the walk in 3 hours at our own pace. Very good experience.

Good walk, completed in 2 hours instead of the 2.5 hours announced. All types of terrain: town, forest, road....etc. To be done in dry weather to avoid slipping in the forest.

Nice walk around Cassel. A long stretch on a tarmac road, which didn't spoil the pleasure (pretty houses and not very busy on a Sunday afternoon).
We made a diversion at the very start of the route to admire the ramparts and the Porte d'Aire (see photo), taking the Bosquillon path rather than the Chemin du Chapitre. Not forgetting a short diversions to the mill as we passed Rue Alexis Bafcop.

A very nice hike, done in 1 hour 40 minutes without exerting any effort, although it was announced as taking 2 hours 30 minutes.
I recommend doing this walk in dry weather, as the Staeck Houver path would be really tricky in wet weather (risk of falling).
It's also worth noting that on Sunday mornings, the few cars, the hikers and the multitude of cyclists riding like mad on the narrow Standaert Straete are not easy to get along with.

Otherwise, the scenery is more than pleasant. Highly recommended.
