Departure in front of Cassel cemetery.
(S/E) With your back to the cemetery, turn right and head north-west. At the bend in Rue du Maréchal Foch, turn right onto Chemin du Chapître, ignoring thefirst street on the right which goes down alongside the cemetery. The street ends at the bottom of some steps.
(1) Climb the steps that lead to the chevet of the collegiate church. Walk along the collegiate church to reach Place de Cassel. Pass in front of the Town Hall and take the first street on the right. Continue along Rue Alexis Bafkop. Cross Rue de Bergues to continue on Rue de l'École.
(2) At the end of Rue de l'École, turn right and 30 metres further on, take the Staeck Houver path opposite, which descends just on the other side of Route de Dunkerque. Be careful, as this path is slippery in wet weather.
(3) Pass in front of the Staeck Houver Chapel. 100 metres after the chapel, the path widens into a farm track. Follow it to the main road and cross it to continue opposite. The path leads to the D218 or Route d'Oudezeele. Take this road to the right for 1.3 km (caution).
(4) At the crossroads (wide left-hand bend), turn right onto Standaert Straete. Follow it to the end for about 1.8 km. This is a quiet street lined with beautiful properties and little traffic (mainly local residents). Enjoy the lovely views of Mont Cassel.
Alternative: to shorten the walk, after 950 m from the crossroads, turn right onto theGRP®® Monts des Flandres.
(5) At the stop sign, turn right onto the D948 for 250 metres (take care).
(6) In the bend, leave the road and take the Sentier des Récollets orGR®®128on the left. Ignore the path that climbs to the right and continue on theGR®® at the edge of the woods for 900m until you reach the D916.
Cross the road and continue straight ahead on theGR®® trail, which bends to the right and climbs towards Cassel.
The path leads to a small street that climbs to the right. Take this street, cross the paved road or Avenue Albert Mahieu. Opposite, take Chemin de la Perche and follow this street for 110 metres.
(7) At the T-junction, turn left and immediately look for the path on the lower right that descends into the woods via Chemin de la Perche for 270 metres.
(8) Turn left onto a path that climbs, widens and runs alongside the cemetery. At the junction with the paved road, turn left to return to Cassel cemetery (S/E).
