Esquelbecq Castle and countryside

A lovely circular route, culminating in the (private) Château d’Esquelbecq and its gardens; the whole site is open to visitors during the season (€5 in 2020).

Description of the walk

Park in the village’s central square, at the foot of the church and near the castle and the tourist office.

(S/E) With your back to the tourist office, take the road on the left at the end of the square, the CD 17, towards Zegerscappel.

(1) Follow Rue de la Gare. Walk along the side wall of the château grounds.
After 700 m, turn left into Rue du Souvenir and then left again into Rue Gabriel Deblock. At the end of the street, you’ll reach Esquelbecq Town Hall.

(2) In front of the town hall, go round the small arboretum via the suggested path to return to Rue du Souvenir and turn left onto it.
Follow this street and pass by the British military cemetery.

(3) At the junction of Rue du Souvenir and Rue de la Gare, continue straight on along Somme Straete until the next junction, about 700 m away.

(4) Turn right into Rue de Pitgam, then left at the next junction onto Rue Geete Straete

(5) Cross Rue de Bissezeele and continue along Rue Geete Straete towards the fishing pond via the grassy path shown. Walk around the pond, join Rue du Moulin and take it to the left.

(6) Turn right onto Chemin du Héron, at the chapel. Continue along this path to the end and turn right. Follow the grassy path to reach Rue Sandt Put Straete.

(7) Almost at the end of this path, turn right towards the Bergies cobbled street and immediately left into Rue de Bergues to reach the central square (S/E).

After a rather unpleasant stretch through town along a busy road, the route takes us through the countryside and past groves full of blackberries – in peak season, it must be absolutely brilliant.
