Speicher - Appenzell via the Alpenpanorama Weg

For ease of description, the following symbols are used
R sign: Yellow sign with hiker pictogram
W sign: Sign or diamond with the word Wanderweg
Sign No. 3: Yellow sign with green sticker No. 3.
Sign No. 22: Yellow multi-directional sign with green sticker No. 22.

(S) From the Hotel Krone, head south-east on the Hauptstrasse. Pass the railway station and turn left onto Herbrigersteig. Sign No. 22 for Trogen. Follow the signs to Eggli.

(1) At Eggli, go around the farm and take a path that descends towards the Säglibach stream. Cross the bridge and go up towards the Trogen cantonal school. Sign No. 22

(2) Between the two main buildings of the Kantonsschule, take the stairs and then the Kantiweg to return to the road to Speicher in Trogen. Sign No. 22. Go up Speicher Strasse towards the east to the town centre (sign No. 3). At the roundabout, take the first street on the right (Oberdorf). After a fairly steep 200-metre slope on Oberdorfstrasse, you will see another sign W.

(3) Turn left onto the path called Berg until you reach the next sign No. 3.

(4) On the right, head towards the Thrüen farm and you will come to Bühlerstrasse in Sand. Sign No. 3

(5) At the intersection, turn right towards Unterbach, sign No. 3.

(6) Turn left onto a forest track towards Wissegg, keeping an eye out on the right for the start of a path that begins with a few steps and is indicated by a sign marked R.

(7) Leave the track, turn right and after the stairs join Wisseggstrasse. Sign No. 3.

(8) Turn right towards Hohe Buche via Wisseggstrasse. You will arrive at Restaurant Hohe Buche, the highest point of the stage. Superb panoramic view and signpost No. 3.

(9) Follow the numerous signs on the ridge and descend towards the Rämsen farm. At an altitude of 1057 metres, ignore the farm on the right and climb up the mountain pasture to a small hillock. Signpost No. 3. Begin the descent to a new intersection. Signpost No. 3.

(10) Continue to the village of Bühler, following the signs. You will reach Dorfstrasse. Signpost No. 3.

(11) Cross the main road carefully, then the railway line. Cross the Rotbach, turn right, facing the playground, then take the first road on the left. Gain a little altitude as you walk towards Mehlersweid, Untere Hägni and then Obere Hägni, following the numerous signs.

(12) At signpost No. 3, turn right onto a path at the edge of the woods, which leads to the Gehrenberg road. Another signpost No. 3.

(13) Continue downhill towards Appenzell, passing through the mountain pastures of Rellen, Egg, Rüdlis and Althus. Sign No. 3.

(14) Keep heading south towards Appenzell. Follow the numerous signs to a roundabout marking the entrance to the town. Sign No. 3.

(15) Cross the main road with caution, follow Gaiserstrasse to the bridge over the River Sitter. Cross the bridge and you will arrive at the start of the pedestrianised town centre and the Hotel Adler (E)
