Appenzell - the Schwägalp via the Alpenpanorama Weg

For ease of description, the following symbols are used
R sign: Yellow sign with a hiker pictogram
W sign: Sign or diamond with the word Wanderweg
Sign No. 3: Yellow sign with green sticker No. 3.

(S) From the Hotel Adler, heading west, take the Hauptgasse (pedestrian street). Continue until you reach the first sign No. 3 shortly after passing the Saint Maurice church.

(1) Turn left onto Poststrasse and you will soon reach the railway station. Sign No. 3.

(2) Use the underpass to reach Güterstrasse. Head west, following the railway tracks until you reach a level crossing. Sign No. 3.

(3) Cross the railway tracks, turn left into the first street and you will soon reach the sports grounds. Sign No. 3.

(4) Follow the small passageway that goes around the sports fields and comes out onto Kaustrasse. Sign W.

(5) Take Kaustrasse heading south-east. Cross St Antonstrasse with caution, then the railway line. After a bend, look for the start of a path on the left. Sign No. 3.

(6) Start climbing the winding road, first through the woods, then in the open as you approach the Eischen campsite. Sign No. 3.

(7) At the campsite exit, turn south. Follow the numerous signs for Kronberg and you will easily reach the Vordere Wasserschaffen mountain pasture. Signpost No. 3.

(8) Continue west along a ridge and return to the Scheidegg mountain restaurant. Signpost No. 3.

(9) Continue climbing towards the Saint-Jackob chapel, which is already clearly visible.

(10) Make one last effort to reach the summit of Kronberg, the highest point of the stage, and the top station of the cable car. Sign No. 3.

(11) Facing south, begin the descent and reach an intersection. Sign No. 3.

(12) At the sign, turn left towards Schwägalp. Descend to the Langälpli mountain pasture. Sign No. 3.

(13) Keep heading south, gaining a little altitude to reach the Chammhaldenhütte. Signpost No. 3.

(14) Follow the signs for Schwägalp and join a small road. Signpost No. 3.

(15) Walk about 150 metres along this small road until you reach the start of a path on the right. Signpost W.

(16) The buildings of Schwägalp are now clearly visible. Follow the various signs to easily reach the Säntis hotel (E).

• ? Alpine pastures: You will cross many alpine pastures, where farmers are very cooperative with hikers. Please stay on the paths that cross their property. Don't forget to close gates behind you.
