Slap Kozjak

This short family walk will take you to Slap Kozjak, one of Slovenia’s most beautiful waterfalls, despite its modest height (just 15 metres). What makes this waterfall special is the large pool at its base, where you can easily swim or even dive in – provided you’re not put off by the relatively cool water!
On the way back, a break by the banks of the wonderful River Soca is also a welcome treat…
Please note that an entry fee of €4 per person was charged in July 2019.

Description of the walk

From Kobarid, follow the road leading to the Napoleon Bridge. Just before the bridge, turn left towards Kamp Lazar. There’s a large (free) car park just before you reach the campsite.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the road towards the campsite. Walk past reception and, at the end of the road, turn right onto the steps leading down to the Soca.

(1) Cross the Soca via the 50-metre-long footbridge (which is about 20 metres high!) then turn left towards Slap Kozjak.
Follow this wide, shaded path to a small bridge, under which flows the river originating from Slap Kozjak.

(2) Carry on straight ahead, following the river along the right bank. A few minutes further on, two small bridges take you closer to the waterfall, before you reach a jetty fitted with a handrail from which you can admire the waterfall and its pool from above.

(3) If you’d like to have a swim or get closer to the pool, you’ll need to retrace your steps to the foot of the jetty, take off your shoes and wade up the stream barefoot (the water will come up to the bottom of your thighs in summer) and settle down on the left-hand side on a ‘beach’ of large pebbles!

For the return journey, follow the same route as on the way there (S/E).

Worth a visit

A dip (or just lazing about, as the water’s cold!) by the banks of the Soca…

Hike partially completed on 24 July 2023 with three children aged 8, 10 and 12

We set off from Kobarid along the historic trail; it was straightforward and there were very few people once we’d passed the ossuary. The southern descent was undergoing stabilisation work (the path was closed), and the map feature in the app proved indispensable for reaching the trench area.
We turned back at the ticket hut for the waterfall – it was far too crowded that day. Instead, we went for a swim in the Soca River south of Kamp Koren (a tip given to us by a water hiking guide). A lovely, easy day’s hike or walk

Yes, I think it’s a recent development; many of the French walkers we came across were surprised too. There are other similar ‘pay-to-enter’ huts on various walking routes in the area (Mostnica Korita, etc.).

Good evening, Lisalbourki,

I’m surprised and disappointed to learn that the website is now a paid service, which wasn’t the case last summer.

I’ll add this to the description of the walk.

Thank you for letting me know.

Please note: there’s an entrance fee! We went to see this waterfall in July 2019 – it was a huge disappointment. There’s a hut at the end of a 30-minute walk, and each adult has to pay 4 euros to get through (there’s a family rate of 10 euros if I remember correctly). We paid the fee and… what a let-down! Access to the waterfall is restricted to a viewing platform (which is far too small for the large number of tourists present). You have to squeeze in to get a view; the waterfall is beautiful, but the platform is rather poorly positioned. We’d advise you to go early. Picnicking and even swimming are prohibited (the site offers rafting trips down the waterfall, but I don’t know the price). The crowds and the commercialisation of the site contribute to the disappointment you might feel if you’re keen on the mountains.
