Slemenova Spica

This hike to the summit of Slemenova Spica, a classic route starting from the Vrsic Pass, will allow you to get away from the crowds at the pass and enjoy a beautiful 360° panorama of the northern part of Triglav National Park, including two of its highest peaks: Skrlatica and Jalovec.

Description of the walk

You can park at the pass by the side of the road... You won’t be alone! Someone wearing a high-vis vest will come round to collect a €3 fee (summer 2018 rate).

(S/E) From the pass, a sign indicates the path to follow towards Slemenova Spica. Head up to the left of the road towards Kranjska Gora. After about fifteen minutes, a path climbs up to the left towards Mala Mostrovka. Continue straight on. Another fifteen minutes or so later, you’ll reach an unnamed pass.

(1) A new path branches off to the left towards Mala Mostrovka. Ignore it and head down to the right towards Slemenova Spica.
Caution: After a fairly flat section, there is a short tricky section where you will need to use your hands.
The path then continues along a ledge with a beautiful view towards Vitranc near Kranjska Gora. Ignore the path leading down to the right and continue straight on towards Slemenova Spica (markings on the ground).

(2) Shortly afterwards, the final ascent begins and you leave the marked trail to climb up to the right along a well-marked path towards the summit. After passing a wide grassy plateau, you will have only a few metres (vertical) left to reach the summit.

Enjoy the beautiful 360° view, with the Planica ski jump to the north, the pointed Jalovec (2645m) to the south-west, the various peaks of Mojstrovka to the south, and Skrlatica (2740m) in the distance to the south-east.

(3) The return journey follows the same route back to the car park at the Vrsic Pass (S/E).

Notes

Do not underestimate this hike, which appears easy.

Make sure you take plenty of water in summer, as it can get very hot.

Good walking boots will come in handy on the very stony and slippery sections.

After a steep climb at the start for about 30 minutes, the rest of the walk is really very pleasant.
The scenery is superb.

A lovely walk with a beautiful view. It’s a bit busy at the start as this is the starting point for several walks, but the path clears out after the first climb (after about 20 minutes).

  • I completely agree that you shouldn’t underestimate the hike. I’ve seen this for myself on all the routes I’ve taken this summer in Slovenia (the Bohinj and Logarska Dolina regions)
  • The unnamed pass (1) is named on some maps: Vratca (1,807 m). Vratca means ‘gate’ or ‘small gate’ in Slovenian. The map I use on my Garmin GPS is from the website https://www.wanderreitkarte.de/ (these are downloadable for Garmin GPS devices only). A major advantage of these maps is that the difficulty levels are indicated (T2, T3, T4). This allows you to plan your routes properly and know what to expect before setting off.
  • Just to clarify: apart from the final ascent, this route forms part of stage 14 of the Via Alpina Red.

Kind regards,
