Tour of Lake Bohinj and Savica Waterfall

Lake Bohinj (Bohinjsko jezero) is Slovenia’s largest glacial lake. It is situated within Triglav National Park. Less crowded than Lake Bled, it is well worth a visit.
Nearby, Savica Waterfall is the perfect addition to this hike.

Description of the walk

From the town of Bled, take the road towards Lake Bohinj. Find a car park between Ribčev Laz and the lake (Jezero). All car parks are pay-and-display (between €5 and €10 per day).
Head to the end of the lake at the Hotel Jezero.

(S/E) From Hotel Jezero, take the path on the left that branches off from the road. Continue along the path through the woods, away from the road.

(1) Take the footpath alongside the road and walk along the lake to a campsite.

(2) Take the road on the right and walk past the campsite.

(3) Continue along a dirt track to a small bridge over the Savica.

(4) Cross the bridge and continue north-west until you reach a junction.

(5) Turn left, towards Savica Waterfall (Savica Slap).

(6) At the car park, turn right towards the ticket booth for Savica Slap.

(7) Access to Savica Slap (entrance fee applies), take the footpath to the waterfall pool.

(8) Walk back down to the entrance gate.

(7) Head towards the car park at Okrepcevalnica Savica (lunch break available)

(9) Cross the car park and follow the path back towards the lake.

(6) Return to the junction signposted Savica Slap.

(5) Continue left towards another junction heading north of the lake.

(10) Follow the entire northern shore of the lake to Sveti Janez Church.

(11) Head to the nearby Hotel Jezero, the starting point (S/E).

A very busy route. Instead of following the busy road, it’s better to take the small path through the woods that starts at the fountain, heading from the car park. Please note: parking costs €3 per hour; expect to pay €12 to €15 for the whole trip (there’s also an admission charge for the waterfall). Paid car parks are available everywhere.

A lovely route.
The waterfall is worth a visit if the route isn’t too busy. Please note there is an admission charge.
The end of the lake isn’t worth a detour, as it runs alongside a road. Stick to the undeveloped side.

Walk completed on 19 July 2023 with three children aged 8, 10 and 12

The walk around the lake isn’t really worth it; the northern shore isn’t easily accessible for a refreshing swim and the southern section offers few views.
The path from 5 to 6 is the least busy and the most pleasant.
The climb up to the waterfall is extremely busy, as is the viewpoint overlooking the waterfall. The entrance fee for the waterfall is steep, but not going all the way to the top would take a lot of the point out of the hike.

A lovely, easy hike. The route is straightforward. Although this is one of Slovenia’s most popular tourist spots, we weren’t bothered by the crowds.
The car park is on the right in a field just before you reach the village (with shops and hotels). It cost us 7 euros for the day.
Slap Savica is certainly a pretty waterfall, but having to pay to see it is a bit cheeky. Those who drive up there – the vast majority – also have to park in a pay-and-display car park. It’s true that in this country, we felt we were paying at the till a bit too often to see sites in the great outdoors.
The walk back is straightforward and very pleasant, with the chance to swim in water at a comfortable temperature.
As for the timetable, it’s best to allow plenty of time, between the snack break and the swimming breaks.
Everything you need for a lovely day out...

At the start, we decided to take the path further south shown on the map rather than follow the footpath running alongside the road. This path is very easy to follow and marked with yellow signs with white borders. It adds nearly 4 km to the walk, but it’s much more pleasant to walk through this beautiful forest.
To visit Slap Savica, it’s best to set off very early, otherwise you’ll have to queue to reach the final viewpoint.
The return journey along the track running alongside the lake to the north is a bit tedious.
At the car park at the start, remember to have the exact €15 for the day’s entry, as the ticket machines do not give change.
