Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Blanc Cheval crossroads; Auberge du Coucou.

(S/E) To the right of the inn, follow the Blanc Cheval road and, 20 metres after the barriers, turn left onto the Gommegnies path and continue for 900 metres until you reach the third footbridge. You are now beneath the characteristic trees of the Mormal State Forest: hornbeams, beeches and pedunculate oaks. If you are quiet, you may spot deer along the way.

(1) After crossing the stream, turn left and cross the Albert and Isabelle path – a path is a straight trail cut through the forest. Join the Sambrette, a tributary of the Sambre, and follow its meanders for 500 metres.

(2) Just after the fifth culvert, turn right to join the Laie du Grand Sart and follow it to the left for 150 metres until you reach the Route d'Hargnies or Chemin Planté.
Take the road on the left for 50 metres. Please note that this road can be busy at times.

(3) Turn right onto Laie Pied de Loup, then immediately right onto a path that goes around the site of the remains where Merovingian tombs were found on the site of an old "villa". Cross Laie Pied de Loup and then follow Brai Préchon for about 300 metres.

(4) Cut across the Roulie aux Équettes path at Cheval Blanc, then take the Fontaine à l'Ombre road.

(5) At Fontaine à l'Ombre, turn left, cross the Julia path and join the Blanc Cheval road, which, on the left, takes you back to the starting car park (S/E).

Hike completed yesterday (at the time of writing this review) in temperatures of around 29°C. I chose this trail because it is almost entirely in the forest, so it is cool and shaded. There are a few muddy sections (even after 15 days of sunshine) where you have to climb over branches that are sometimes slippery (be careful not to fall).

Otherwise, the route is fairly easy, and the signage is good. I enjoyed this walk on my rest day (short and without any major climbs).

A very pleasant walk that we have just done for the second time. No difficulty, easy trail to follow with yellow markings. The weather had been dry for several weeks, so ordinary trainers were sufficient, but in wet weather some sections are likely to be muddy due to the presence of numerous streams.

A very beautiful little route. Not many people, just a few mountain bikers coming in the opposite direction. A bit muddy despite the dry weather. Very easy if you're doing it with your family.
