Maquisards Trail and Étang des Cailloux from Grandrupt-de-Bains

Park in the car park in the centre of the village, opposite the church.

(S/E) Leave the car park and head towards the crossroads. Turn right onto the R40E, passing in front of the church below the car park, and continue on this road until you reach the R40d.

(1) Cross it carefully and reach the monument to the Maquis resistance fighters: take the time to learn about their sacrifice. Continue opposite on the path called "Sentier du Maquis".

(2) At this point, be sure to walk down a few metres into the woods to see the petroglyph rock, which you will walk around completely to discover the symbolic drawings engraved on it (petroglyphs). Go back up the path and continue until you quickly reach a large crossroads with a nice picnic area.

(3) Continue straight ahead for a few dozen metres to see a boundary stone bearing a coat of arms. Return to the crossroads.

(3) Leave the path and take a trail on the left that leads into the forest, marked "Rocher du Maquis". Continue along this trail, following the markings. At the bench, continue straight ahead and, a few metres further on, descend to the right towards the Rocher du Maquis.

(4) After reading the information on the site, go back up the path for a few metres, then turn left and go down towards the Ruisseau des Bocards.

(5) Use the footbridge to cross the stream and head back up into the forest. Continue until you reach the edge of the forest, then stay on the wide path until you reach the small car park that was used as a parachute drop site.

(6) Continue straight ahead until you reach the R40d.

(7) Cross it carefully and take the small road opposite, which heads north-east. Leave the roads and paths on your left where the road turns right and climbs through fields and meadows. Leave the road on your right that leads to Grandrupt: you can shorten the route without reaching the Étang des Cailloux. Continue to the next crossroads, where you can also reach Grandrupt by turning right.

(8) Turn left onto the Route Forestière des Chattis, ignore the path that branches off to the right, enter the forest and continue until you reach a tarmac road (D40).

(9) Follow this road to the right until you reach the Étang des Cailloux car park.

(10) At the car park, go up to the right and go through the barrier to reach the lake. We recommend walking all the way around it to appreciate the site. Then leave via a wide forest path going up to the right: this path will be on the left if you have not walked around the lake.

(11) At the junction with a new forest road, turn left, continue for about 200 metres and, as soon as you leave the forest, take a sharp right turn onto a wide path leading up to the edge of the forest. From here, take the time to enjoy the view of the Vosges mountains. Continue along the same path until you reach a crossroads.

(12) Turn left for a few metres, then quickly leave the road and turn right twice to follow a path that passes under a power line and approaches the Étangs à Pierrot.

(13) Turn right towards Grandrupt-de-Bains , taking the time to admire the houses, almost all of which are dated. Continue straight up to the car park (S/E).
