Start from the Colette Museum (Place Blanche car park).
(S/E) Walk down the avenue of lime trees to reach Rue de la Roche; turn right onto this street for 50 metres, then turn left into Rue Colette.
(1) Walk past her birthplace on your left and the ‘front’ garden on your right. Immediately afterwards, turn right into Rue des Gros Bonnets, then, opposite, take Rue du Bourg Gelé (the post office building will be on your left).
At the junction, opposite the War Memorial, head down the left-hand side of Route de Saint Amand for 80 metres, then leave it at the 90° bend to take Rue de Moutiers opposite.
After the bridge under the railway line, turn right onto the path leading to La Marseillaise.
(2) Once you reach this hamlet, take the path on the left before the railway line. Continue along this main path. After the last house on the left, a small path on the right will take you on a round trip to the Bâtisse pottery.
(3) Cross the Loing via the small bridge and head towards Moutiers by turning right twice onto the small tarmac road.
(4) As you arrive in the village, take in the square, which features the Fontaine du Moine Glabert; the church is on your left, with the washhouse just ahead on the left, and the ruins of the old abbey on your right.
(5) At the Stop sign, take the street on the left which passes in front of the church (with its listed murals and superb cloister). At the end of this street, turn left and head uphill to the Lorets crossroads (ignore the gravel path leading into the farm) and take the tarmac road 100 metres further up on the left.
(6) As you pass the Croix Saint-Pierre, made of Puisaye sandstone, you’ll get a sense of just how hard this material is. Cross the road and head down the path.
(7) At this crossroads, turn right and follow this path for about a hundred metres to enjoy a superb view of the village and a quote from *Claudine à l’École*. Then return to the path and continue downhill. You’ll come across the old quarries along the dirt track, which you should follow until the next crossroads. Before crossing the railway line and the road, 25 metres further down on the right, you’ll find the Petit Saint-Jean washhouse with its catchment basin.
(8) When you reach the road, turn left, cross the railway line and take the street opposite that climbs up alongside the church. Walk up this street, which runs partly behind Colette’s house and garden, and, at the top, turn left then right to reach the car park (S/E).
