Description of the walk

The start is in the car park next to the church in Moutiers-en-Puisaye.

(S/E) Head towards the wash house, then turn left at the first junction. Continue along this small road and take the first path on the left down to the river.

(1) Cross the river via the footbridge or by wading, depending on the season. When you reach the end of the path, before the first house and even before you reach the tarmac, turn left onto the path that follows the garden hedge (there is an entrance to a private property about ten metres before this). This path entrance is very inconspicuous; look for the marker post on the embankment on the left and the path entrance will be more visible between the hedge and the fence. Head into the woodland, following the railway line, sometimes above it, sometimes at the same level.

(2) Halfway along, on your right, pass the entrance leading to the Bâtisse pottery.

(3). A little further on, on your left, you’ll have a lovely view of the old abbey and the church at Moutiers. When you reach the road, cross the level crossing onto the D85, then the D151.

(4) Take the path on the left, follow the edge of the woods to the first T-junction, then turn left (ignore the path on the right which continues along the edge of the woods). This section of the path is not shown on the IGN map. Then, at the next junction, turn right to follow the fields (the path is now marked on the map). A distant view of the Saracen tower and the Château de Saint-Sauveur comes into view. Upon reaching the hamlet of Les Michauts, turn left. In front of an old, filled-in pond, turn left, then left again onto the next street, which ends as a dirt track at No. 15.

(5) Pass the first (private) pond on your left and continue along the main path through the woods to reach the hamlet of Les Boulmiers.

(6) Turn right and continue along the road for 500 m. A few steps before the house on the right, take a path on the left (it merges with a field entrance). Follow this sunken path uphill until you reach a road.

(7) Cross it straight ahead, then head back down a dirt track. When you reach a well-marked path, ignore the path going uphill to the left and turn right. You’ll emerge in front of the Étang de Moutiers.

(8) Follow the embankment and turn left just before the railway line. The path runs alongside the pond for a good part of the way (avoid taking the old railway line). You will reach a bridge carrying the railway line (Pont Cobaty).

(9) Cross it and head down a small path on the left, located about 120 m after the bridge. Follow this path through the woods to reach the road. Take this road by turning right and proceed to the junction with the D85. Cross the railway line and the D85, then turn left immediately after this junction onto the road leading back to Moutiers to return to the starting car park (S/E).

Notes

On this route, the existing markings will be of no use to you; they are assigned to other routes listed and described on Visorando.
The paths are wet in places, so wear suitable footwear.
Take care when crossing the D85. Follow the path running parallel to the track without actually taking it.
If you enjoyed the route between the starting point and the point (4), do not hesitate to take it again on the way back; the scenery and the light will surprise you.

Worth a visit

Photos and observations along the route.
In the village, visit the church and its murals, the Fontaine du Moine Glaber, and the newly renovated wash house.

(2) Nearby, the horizontal oven at La Bâtisse (accessible from the (2)).

A little-used route, parts of which will soon be completely overgrown with brambles, which detracts somewhat from its appeal.
Indeed, the ‘very inconspicuous’ little path at point 1 is hard to find. Follow the wire fence of the little house, on the side opposite the railway line. At the end of the fence, there is a small passage 50 cm wide, overgrown with grass; that’s the way.
The same applies at point 6, where the path is barely visible (just some flattened grass); do not go to the right of the field but follow the hedge on the left.
Otherwise, a very pretty stretch along the edge of the pond and the wall decorations at Moutiers church, which alone are worth the detour.
Thank you for the walk.

Hello,
Sorry, but this route does not follow the railway line; it runs alongside it for a section below, via a well-marked path between the pond and the track. Only the crossing of the Loing takes place on the Cobaty Bridge, which is shared with the railway line (approx. 200 m). This walk was completed by a group of 20 people on 22 May 2023 without any problems.

Good evening,
On 19 May, we wanted to go on this walk which, on paper, had everything going for it. But it proved impossible, as the railway line, which has been disused for a long time, is impassable at both ends – as we saw with our own eyes – a fact confirmed to us by a local resident living alongside the track. We ended up having to turn back, walking from the lake’s embankment back to the village along the road… which was very rough! What a nightmare! There is talk of converting it into a greenway…
This ‘adventure’ highlights the limitations of the ‘Visorando’ site when the paths are not, or are no longer, maintained (signposting, clearing of undergrowth, etc.)

A lovely walk that alternates between woodland and open fields, with a beautiful view of the lake.
The stretch through the woods along the old railway line is very picturesque.

It’s convinced me to add a few details to help people find the entrance to this little path.

The only slight difficulty was finding the path leading into the field, as it’s barely there at first and, above all, not visible. Apart from that, it was a lovely walk in the cool shade during this spell of hot weather. Thanks to those who created and described it.
