Parking is available at the walkers’ car park on the B315 between Gündelwangen and Bonndorf. The entrance to the Lotenbach Gorge is directly opposite.

(S) We follow the sign for Lotenbachklamm opposite the car park, right by the bus stop. A narrow path first takes us down a few steps, then along an uneven, partly steep and slippery path through the gorge. After about 550 metres, we keep left at a fork, heading downhill and following the signs for Schattenmühle. The path takes us to the walkers’ car park opposite the Schattenmühle restaurant. We turn left onto the footpath over the bridge and, immediately after the bend, the Schluchtensteig signpost directs us left into the woods.
(1) We follow the path and the signposting. The route goes up and down, sometimes steeper, sometimes less so, until we reach a clearing.
(2) We turn left, walking along the edge of the woodland, staying on the narrow path by keeping left twice, and head back into the woodland. At a fork with indistinct markings, we keep left and head downhill, continuing to follow the path to the Räuberschlössle.
(3) We continue along the path in the same direction through the woods; the path leads downhill and we reach the riverbed and a wider path.
(4) At the bridge, we stay on the right bank of the river and follow our signposting alongside the Wutach. We reach a fork and keep to the left, past a small waterfall.
(5) Continue straight ahead along the forest track; on the left-hand side we can see the Stallegg power station building.
(6) We carry on in the same direction, past the power station’s weir, and come to another fork in the path.
(7) We keep to the left, always following the course of the Wutach, and reach the mouth of the Rötenbach.
If you need to take a break, head left, where you’ll find several benches and a gravel bank.
(8) Otherwise, we cross the Rötenbach via the footbridge and then turn left immediately, continuing to the right along the Wutach. At the next fork, we keep to the left and head downhill. To our right, we can see a gravel field.
(9) Our path takes us along the Wutach, sometimes uphill, sometimes downhill, sometimes steeply, sometimes less so, until we reach a fork and turn left.
(10) At the bridge at the confluence of the Gutach and Wutach, we cross the Gutach/Wutach and from here on follow our signposts along the Haslach. At a junction, we keep to the left, pass a bench and reach the first viewpoint at the Rechenfelsen.
(11) The path takes us, via a few gentle hairpin bends, to the next viewpoint at the Hölllochfelsen.
(12) The path then climbs a little more steeply until we reach the gravelled forest track, the Haslachhaldenweg. There is also a bench here where you can take a breather.
(13) We turn left and now walk along the gravel forest track, which soon joins the cycle path.
(14) We keep to the right and follow the signposts; to our left is the Bähnleradweg cycle path, which runs along the disused Neustadt–Lenzkirch railway line. Eventually, we reach the village of Kappel.
(15) To our left, we can see the former Kappel-Grünwald railway station. We continue our walk first along the tarmac Grünwäder Straße and, at a right-hand bend, turn left onto a narrow path, following the signpost. We ignore all turn-offs for the time being. Once we reach the edge of the wood, we need to pay attention. Our path takes us sharply to the left, running parallel to the Rodenbach stream. We pass the old mill.
(16) We continue slightly downhill to the junction with the rest area. We cross the Bähnler cycle path.
To the left of this, the path descends quite steeply over granite rocks alongside the stream. In the upper section, there are frequent landslides off the path.
(17) We’ve reached the Haslach again; we turn right and continue along our path beside the Haslach. We cross the Bähnler cycle path once more and, shortly afterwards, our path turns left. Finally, we reach the edge of the forest and turn left here. After a short while, we reach the tarmac road ‘Im Niederdorf’, which we follow.
We come to Ludwig-Kegel-Straße, with the German Red Cross (DRK) and ATMOS Medizintechnik on our left. Immediately afterwards, we turn left onto a footpath and reach the street ‘Am Kurpark’, which we follow to the right. We pass the Kurhaus and the town hall, in front of which we keep to the left and, on Kirchplatz, eventually reach the through road Kolumban-Kayser-Straße. We cross this at the zebra crossing, then turn left and, after a few metres, reach our destination on the right-hand side.
(E) Buses depart from here towards Schluchsee or Titisee-Neustadt.
