Gorge Trail Variation Stage 3 – From the Lotenbachklamm gorge to Lenzkirch

The Schluchtensteig trail leads in 6 stages over 119 km from Stühlingen to Wehr across the southern Black Forest. Our third stage starts at the upper entrance to the Lotenbachklamm gorge and ends in Lenzkirch, where there are numerous accommodation options and a bus connection to the start of stage 4. Alternatively, you can spend the night in Schluchsee and climb the Riesenbühlturm tower, see the corresponding tour.
If you want to hike all stages of the Schluchtensteig, you can stay overnight in the Schattenmühle between stages 2 and 3. From there, you can tackle the Lotenbachklamm gorge and hike up to the starting point of this hike.

Description of the walk

Parking is available at the hiking car park on the B315 between Gündelwangen and Bonndorf. The entrance to the Lotenbachklamm gorge is directly opposite.
Bus stop Gündelwangen Lothenbachklamm, bus 7258 and bus 7343 https://www.rvf.de/fahrplan-netz/fahrplanauskunft/efa.

(S) Follow the sign for Lotenbachklamm opposite the car park, right next to the bus stop. A narrow path leads down a few steps, then along an uneven, partly steep and slippery path through the gorge. After approx. 550 m, keep left at the fork and follow the signs for Schattenmühle. The path takes us to the hiking car park opposite the Schattenmühle restaurant. We turn left onto the footpath over the bridge and immediately after the bend, the sign for the Schluchtensteig trail points us left into the forest.

(1) Follow the path and the trail markers. The trail goes up and down, sometimes steeply, sometimes less steeply, until you reach a clearing.

(2) We turn left, follow the edge of the forest, stay on the narrow path by keeping left twice, and dive back into the forest. At a fork with unclear markings, we keep left downhill and continue to follow the path to the Räuberschlössle.

(3) We continue in the same direction through the forest, descending until we reach the riverbed and a wider path.

(4) At the bridge, stay on the right side of the river and follow the trail markers parallel to the Wutach. You will reach a fork and keep left, passing a small waterfall.

(5) Continue straight ahead on the forest path; on the left, you will see the Stallegg power station building.

(6) Continue in the same direction, past the power station's weir, until you reach another fork.

(7) Keep left, always parallel to the Wutach, and you will reach the mouth of the Rötenbach.
If you need to take a break, turn left, where you will find several benches and a gravel bed.

(8) Otherwise, cross the Rötenbach stream via the footbridge and immediately turn left, continuing along the right bank of the Wutach. At the next fork, keep left and descend. You will see a gravel field on your right.

(9) Our path leads us along the Wutach, sometimes uphill, sometimes downhill, sometimes steep, sometimes less steep, until we reach a fork and turn left.

(10) At the Gutachmündung bridge, cross the Gutach/Wutach and follow the signposts along the Haslach. At a crossroads, keep left, pass a bench and you will reach the first viewpoint at the Rechenfelsen.

(11) The path leads us in a few small switchbacks to the next viewpoint at the Hölllochfelsen.

(12) The trail then climbs a little more steeply until we reach the gravel forest road Haslachhaldenweg. There is also a bench here where you can catch your breath.

(13) We turn left and now walk along the gravel forest road, which soon meets the cycle path.

(14) Keep right and follow the sign, with the Bähnleradweg cycle path on your left on the disused Neustadt–Lenzkirch railway line. You will eventually reach the village of Kappel.

(15) On our left, we can see the former Kappel-Grünwald railway station. We continue on the paved Grünwäder Straße and turn left at the right-hand bend onto a narrow path, following the signposts. We ignore all turnings for the time being. Once we reach the edge of the forest, we need to pay attention. Our path leads us sharply to the left, parallel to the Rodenbach stream. We pass the old mill.

(16) Continue slightly downhill to the crossroads with a rest area. Cross the Bähnleradweg cycle path.
To the left, the path descends quite steeply over granite rocks along the stream. In the upper part, there are frequent landslides outside the path.

(17) We have reached the Haslach again, turn right and continue on our path along the Haslach. We cross the Bähnleradweg cycle path again and shortly afterwards our path leads to the left. Finally, we reach the edge of the forest and turn left here. After a short time, we reach the asphalt road Im Niederdorf, which we follow.

We arrive at Ludwig-Kegel-Straße, with the DRK and ATMOS Medizintechnik on our left. Immediately afterwards, we turn left onto a footpath and reach Am Kurpark, which we follow to the right. Pass the Kurhaus and the town hall, keep left and follow Kirchplatz until you reach Kolumban-Kayser-Straße. Cross this road at the zebra crossing, turn left and after a few metres you will see your destination on the right.

(E) Here, buses run towards Schluchsee or Titisee-Neustadt.
